Both the Princeton men's and women's swimming and diving team had strong individual showings this weekend during the season-opening Ohio State Open. Both teams fell to nationally ranked Ohio State teams, but both earned wins over Denison University.
The Princeton men fell 209-136 to 10th-ranked Ohio State, but defeated Denison 262-91. The Tiger women fell 226-121 to 16th-ranked Ohio State, but defeated Denison 284-69.
Juniors Teo D'Alessandro and Byron Sanborn both got their seasons off to a particularly strong start. D'Alessandro won the 500 free in 4:35.99, and he added a 200 IM victory in 1:48.85. He also added a third-place finish in the 200 free in 1:38.81. Sanborn, a former NCAA Championships qualifer, had Princeton's other win, a 200 breast victory in 2:01.65. He also finished second in the 100 breast in 55.92.
Freshman Corey Okubo earned his first collegiate victory, claiming the 400 IM in 3:56.30. He also took second in the 200 fly (1:47.98) and third in the 200 IM (1:51.27).
Reigning Ivy League champion Michael Strand finished third in the 100 back in 49.65. Harrison Wagner (20.64) and Julian Mackrel (20.91) went 2-3 in the 50 free, while Wagner added a second-place finish in the 100 free in 45.46.
Another former Ivy League champion, Connor Maher, took second in the 200 back in 1:48.09.
On the women's side, junior tri-captain Nikki Larson showed she was ready to build on last year's trip to the NCAA Championships. Larson won the 100 fly in 55.77, and she took second in the 50 free (23.41), the 100 free (50.64) and the 200 fly (2:01.59).
Princeton also got two wins on the diving board, as sophomore Caitlin Chambers won the 1-meter (283.15) and the 3-meter competitions (317.10). Chambers was Princeton's top finisher last year in her Ivy League Championships debut.
Freshman Alisabeth Marsteller had a pair of Top-3 finishes. She took second in the 500 free in 5:02.40, and she finished third in the 200 IM in 2:05.54.
The Tigers also got second-place finishes from both Beverly Nguyen (200 back, 2:06.76) and Olivia Chan (200 breast, 2:25.90).
Princeton will open its Ivy League schedules in two weeks when it hosts both Penn and Cornell Nov. 21 at DeNunzio Pool. Men's head coach Rob Orr will look for his 300th win that day; the victory over Denision did not count because the program is a Division III school.
