PRINCETON, N.J. (12/4/14) - The Princeton men's hockey team returns to the ECAC slate hosting No. 9 Harvard and Dartmouth this weekend at Hobey Baker Rink. The Crimson come to town on Friday, Dec. 5 with the Big Green coming in on Saturday, Dec. 6. Both games are at 7 p.m.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton split its series with Michigan State last weekend, taking a 3-1 game on Friday night before a 4-2 loss on Saturday. The Tigers are 2-7-1 overall and are 1-5 in the ECAC with their win over Cornell in the home opener, 2-1. Sophomore Ben Foster currently sits atop the scoring column with two goals and two assists for four points. Senior defender Aaron Ave, senior Aaron Kesselman and juniors Jonathan Liau and Kyle Rankin add three points apiece. Kesselman is the team leader in assists with three. Sophomore Colton Phinney has played all but one game, the Union game, and has a .918 save percentage and a 3.16 goals against average. Freshman Ben Halford was in net for Princeton's loss at Union, his first career start.
THE PRINCETON/HARVARD SERIES
Harvard holds a 148-57-11 record over Princeton in the all-time series. The teams first met on March 1, 1902 in New York City. The Crimson swept the series last year, 5-3 and 3-2. Princeton won both games in 2012-13 taking both in overtime, 3-2 and 2-1. Jonathan Liau has three assists in three games against Harvard, while Aaron Ave has a goal and two assists in five games. Kyle Rankin has chipped in two helpers and is +3 in the series. Colton Phinney has faced Harvard just once, making 30 saves on 33 shots.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard is ranked No. 9 in the national polls with a 7-1-2 overall record. The squad is tied for second in the league with a 3-1-2, the only loss to a one-goal game to Yale. The Crimson are on a four-game win streak that includes a 3-2 OT win over then-ranked No. 1 Boston University from last Tuesday. With eight NHL draft picks Harvard is led in scoring by New Jersey pick Alexander Kerfoot's 15 points. He has 11 assists and four goals. Nashville pick Jimmy Vesey has a team-best eight goals and six assists for 14 points. Kyle Criscuolo and Vancouver's Patrick McNally follow up with 13 points apiece. In goal, Minnesota's Steve Michalek has been between the pipes all season and has a .947 save percentage and a 1.57 GAA.
THE PRINCETON/DARTMOUTH SERIES
Dartmouth owns a 96-86-14 edge in the series with Princeton. Princeton won the first game, 5-2, back on Jan. 9, 1907. The teams split last year with the Tigers taking a 5-4 overtime victory at Hobey Baker Rink in November before the Big Green got one back, a 5-3 game in Hanover in February. Tucker Brockett has a goal and four assists with a +6, while Tyler Maugeri has two goals and three assists and a +3. This will be the first time Dartmouth will see starting netminder Colton Phinney.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth is coming off of its biggest win of the season a 2-0 game over then-ranked No. 1 Boston University and is receiving votes in both national polls. The Big Green are 4-3-1 overall, winning three of its last four games - all of which were at home. On the road, Dartmouth is 1-1-1 and is ninth in the ECAC standings with a 2-3-1 record. Senior Tyler Sikura leads the team with nine points on two goals and a team-high seven assists. Senior Eric Robinson (no relation) and junior Brad Schierhorn have four goals and four assists apiece. Five of the top seven scorers in fact are seniors, with that class scoring 56 percent of the team's points. Junior James Kruger has been the only netminder used by the Big Green this season. He has a 1.85 goals against average and a .930 save percentage.
