Record-Breaking Performance By Chambers Highlights Final Day Of Brown Open
December 08, 2014 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Sophomore Caitlin Chambers was having a remarkable season before she took her first dive Sunday. By the end of the day, she was having a record-breaking season. Chambers broke one of the program's oldest records to highlight a strong final day at the Brown Open, which included the conclusion of dual meet victories over both Brown and Dartmouth.
Chambers won the 3-meter diving competition with 326.30 points, which kept her undefeated on the season. However, her record-breaking performance came during the prelims, when she scored 342.70 points; that total topped the 1998 record of 341.18, set by Erin Lutz. Princeton also had top-four finishes by both Lisa Li (third, 289.85) and Deborah Daly (fourth, 283.35) during a strong showing.
"I'm really excited to see what our team accomplished this past weekend," head coach Susan Teeter said. "We've been training so well and I'm excited that we had such great swims and performances on the boards for the divers at this point in our season. It's a great way to head home for the holidays.
"I'm really proud of Caitlin for her new school record on 3 meter," Teeter added. "She broke the record of one of our greats, Erin Lutz. I know Erin would be happy for her. We also achieved several NCAA B Standards without rest, which is a credit to the level of work we have put in already this season. I am very pleased, but I know they will work very hard to accomplish the rest of our goals this season."
Senior Reese Iriondo opened the swimming competition with a third-place finish in the mile (16.49.93), while freshman Mary Kate Davis was just off her pace with a fourth-place time of 16:52.24. Another senior, Shirley Wang, added a third-place finish in the 200 back (2:00.10), while junior Sada Stewart went fifth in 2:02.54.
Following a fourth-place finish for Katie Diller in the 100 free (50.98), Melissa Fulenwider took seventh in the 200 breast in 2:21.23. Morgan Karetnick (2:00.53) and Claire McIlmail (2:01.11) both had top-five times in the 200 fly. McIlmail then led off a winning 400 free relay; she teamed with Alisabeth Marsteller, Madelyn Veith and Katie Diller to win in 3:22.00.
While Princeton did move to 4-0 in the Ivy League with the wins over Brown and Dartmouth, they did so without the services of several of their top swimmers. The quartet of Olivia Chan, Nikki Larson, Lindsay Temple and Elsa Welshofer competed at the 2014 AT&T Winter National Championships, where the quartet went 3:44.56 to finish 17th in a loaded 400 medley relay field.
Several swimmers moved into the all-time Princeton Top 10 during the weekend. Welshofer moved to fourth in the 100 fly, where she also achieved an NCAA 'B' cut, and she moved to seventh in the 200 fly. Liz McDonald was another who moved up the fly chart with a 'B' cut, as she now stands eighth in the 100 fly. Karetnick also achieved a B cut in the 100 fly.
Temple moved to seventh in the 200 back, while McIlmail moved up in to categories. She earned a B cut in the 200 free and moved to sixth at Princeton, and she also moved to 10th in the 500.
Princeton will now be off for the holiday break, but will return to DeNunzio Pool Jan. 9 to take on NC State.
