Princeton Men's Water Polo Upends No. 8 UC-Irvine in Overtime, 14-12

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 11th-ranked Princeton University men's water polo team improved to 6-0 on the season with a thrilling 14-12 overtime victory over No. 8 UC-Irvine at the 2014 Bruno Fall Classic hosted by Brown University.
Trailing 2-1 after the first quarter, Princeton accounted for five of the six scores in the second period to take a 6-3 lead into the locker room. UC-Irvine responded with three unanswered in the third quarter before the teams each netted a pair of goals in the final eight minutes of regulation. The Tigers outscored the Anteaters 6-4 down the stretch to seal the victory.
Drew Hoffenberg paced the Princeton attack with three goals, five steals and an assist, while Jordan Colina, Thomas Nelson and Sam Butler each had a pair of goals. Jamie Kuprenas chipped in with a goal, three assists and three steals, with Bradley Wachtell, Jovan Jeremic, Connor McGoldrick and Eric Bowen accounting for the Tigers' other tallies.
Playing the first half, Alex Gow made five saves. Taking over in the third quarter, Vojislav Mitrovic notched six stops in his first eight minutes in net. The freshman goalie added six more saves in the fourth quarter and overtime to finish with 12.
As a team, the Orange and Black went 6-0 on sprints, while amassing 15 steals and drawing seven ejections. Three of the Tigers' goals came on the counterattack, with two scores coming by way of a man-up advantage and one tally occurring while short-handed.
Princeton returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 20 with a pair of Southern Division tilts against Johns Hopkins and Navy.
