BRUNO FALL CLASSIC TOURNAMENT HOMEPAGE
New Year, New Result
In a rematch of the 2013 CWPA Eastern championship game, the Princeton men's water polo team squared off with St. Francis in its season opener last Saturday. However, unlike last year's title tilt, which the Terriers won 11-9, it was the Tigers who emerged victorious, earning a 10-5 decision over their regional rival. Jumping out to an early lead, Princeton stretched its margin to 5-0 by the intermission. Building a 6-2 cushion entering the final frame, the Orange and Black outscored the visitors 4-3 over the final eight minutes to avenge last season's setback.
Fast Start
Despite a lightning delay that prematurely ended the first day of competition, Princeton won all three of its matches at its annual Invitational Tournament. Outscoring their opponents 40-24, the Tigers dispatched of St. Francis (10-5) on Saturday before scoring a pair of decisions over Johns Hopkins (10-8) and Iona (20-11) the following afternoon. Through three games, Princeton is 8-3 (.727) on sprints, with a .500 shot percentage. All but two position players have recorded a goal, with seven Tigers notching at least three scores.
Weekly Honors
Notching a pair of wins in his first two collegiate appearances, freshman goalie Vojislav Mitrovic was named the CWPA Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week. Facing 44 shots in 64:00 minutes, he stopped 31 attempts en route to a 0.705 save percentage. Making 15 saves in the win over defending Eastern champion St. Francis, he was every bit as good against Johns Hopkins, recording 16 stops. Also earning a spot on the CWPA Honor Roll was fellow freshman Jordan Colina. Netting three goals and nabbing two steals against St. Francis, Colina also found the back of the net against Johns Hopkins and Iona.
Standout Seniors
Senior co-captains Drew Hoffenberg and Kayj Shannon have gotten off to strong starts this season. Combining for eight goals, the duo also amassed seven drawn ejections, six steals, three assists and two blocks. Scoring against St. Francis and Iona, Hoffenberg dished out three assists against JHU. Just the second player in program history to reach the 100-assist plateau, he currently sits second on the Tigers' all-time chart with 104 helpers. Finishing with two goals and two steals against St. Francis, Shannon turned in a hat-trick against Johns Hopkins while also drawing a pair of ejections.
Thrown Into Action
All five of Princeton's freshmen saw time this weekend led by Vojislav Mitrovic. The goalie was 2-0 in his two starts, surrendering 13 goals while stopping 31 shots en route to a .705 save percentage. Jordan Colina had five goals in three games, while adding five steals and going 3-0 in sprints. Connor McGoldrick, Eric Bowen and Ryan Hammarskjold also saw action in all three contests, combining for six goals, three assists, three steals, three drawn ejections and two blocks.
Scouting Cal Baptist
Princeton is 1-2 all-time against Cal Baptist. The Lancers opened their 2014 campaign with a pair of losses to No. 2 UCLA (21-3) and No. 10 UC-Davis (13-8). Through the team's first two games, David Ring notched four goals, while Brent Teraoka had three goals and three drawn ejections. Elad Gunya had two goals and an assist. Breaking into the win column, CBU defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in its home opener (11-10) before rolling to an 11-goal victory over Riverside City College (18-7). Eric Carnohan paced the Lancers against CMS, tallying four goals, including three during the fourth quarter. Goalie Joseph Moorman recorded 13 saves. Eight different players found the back of the net against Riverside, led by Carnohan and Teraoka, who each had four scores.
Scouting MIT
Originally scheduled to play the Tigers at last weekend's Invitational, the game was canceled due to lightning. The Engineers will get another opportunity to earn their first victory over Princeton, having gone winless over the first nine meetings against the Orange and Black. Dropping its season opener to George Washington (11-10), MIT defeated Diablo Valley College (14-13) before closing out Invitational play with a 16-13 triumph over Iona. Kale Rogers had four goals against George Washington, before netting the game winner against Diablo Valley with just 1:50 remaining in regulation. Ory Tasman currently leads the squad with 11 goals, followed by Rogers with eight.
Scouting UC-Irvine
Sunday's showdown at the Bruno Fall Classic will mark just the second meeting between Princeton and UC-Irvine with the Anteaters securing a 15-7 victory during the 2009 season. Opening the year at the Triton Invitational, Irvine enters this weekend's action with a 4-0 record having downed Loyola Marymount (11-6), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (17-7), UC-Davis (9-5) and La Verne (25-8). Lovre Milos has already racked up 23 goals, including a season-high eight against CMS. Jacob Mourer and Matt Skinner each have six scores, with 16 different players having recorded a goal. Dylan Peterson has looked good in net, racking up 41 saves en route to a 6.46 goals-against average and .661 save percentage.
