PRINCETON, N.J. (1/10/15) - Senior defender Tom Kroshus scored twice but Princeton couldn't overcome a three-goal first-period deficit as the Tigers lost 5-2 to Rensselaer on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Hobey Baker Rink.
It marked the first multiple-goal game for Kroshus, his first goals of the season and his fourth and fifth career goals.
Rensselaer got on the board at 5:36 when Matt Neal broke the puck out of the zone, sending a pass across and up the ice to Jacob Laliberte. After reaching the left face-off circle Laliberte sent the puck across the slot to Curtis Leonard who flipped it into the back of the net at 5:36.
Drew Melanson scored on a breakaway at 11:06. Leonard dug the puck out the corner and sent it behind his own goal to teammate Zach Schroeder. Schroeder sent the puck up the ice to Melanson who was all alone and beat Princeton netminder Colton Phinney gloveside.
Less than three minutes later it was a 3-0 game. This time it was a pass from Jake Wood and Luke Curadi behind the Princeton net followed by a feed to Chris Bradley who was wide open in the slot. Bradley one-timed it over the left shoulder of Phinney.
Princeton pulled Phinney and called a timeout, however at the end of the timeout Phinney would go back to his crease.
A power-play goal at 12:33 expanded the Engineers lead in the second period. Neal roofed in a cross-ice pass from Laliberte with Leonard getting credit for the secondary assist.
Princeton thought it had scored and objected as the officials were about to drop the puck. Officials reviewed the video and called it a goal. The hard shot hit by Kroshus bombed off the back of the net and Kasdorf gloved it as it caroomed back out. Ben Foster fed Kroshus from along the right boards after Mike Ambrosia chipped it down the ice from the defensive end.
Kyle Rankin won a draw back in the left circle and it was scooped up by Jonathan Liau. Liau pushed the puck to the point for Kroshus who skated into the middle and fired through traffic and past Rankin who had a nice vertical to get out of the way as the puck flew past Kasdorf.
With time winding down it was only a matter of time before Phinney would get pulled for the extra skater. With 59 seconds remaining and the Tigers with possession Phinney skated towards the bench but just as he got there Princeton turned the puck over and Viktor Leljegren scored on the empty net.
Phinney was forced to return to goal after Princeton drew a penalty with 32 seconds left. He finished the game with 25 saves.
Kasdorf stopped 35 shots, as Princeton outshot RPI 37-30.
Princeton was 0 for 3 on the power play, while RPI was 1 of 2.
RPI ends an eight-game losing skid and improves to 7-16-1 and 5-6 in the ECAC, while Princeton falls to 2-14-1 and 1-11 in the league.
The Tigers will take a two-week hiatus for exams and semester break and return to the ice on Tuesday, Jan. 27 when they host Army.
