January 31, 2015 | Women's Swimming and Diving
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY LIVE RESULTS l LIVE VIDEO
Victories by Rebecca Fleming, Nikki Larson and Caitlin Chambers helped the Princeton women's swimming and diving team establish a slim lead after Day 1 of the annual H-Y-P meet at Blodgett Pool. The Tigers lead host Harvard by four points, and they hold a 17-point lead over Yale.
Through eight of 16 events, Princeton leads Harvard 77-73 and Yale 83.50-66.50. The second session, which will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network, begins at noon and will include the 100 and 500 free, the 200 back, breast and IM, the 100 fly, 1-meter diving and the meet-ending 400 free relay.
Fleming earned Princeton its first win of the weekend by taking the 1000 in 9:58.48, less than half a second faster than Yale's Cailley Silbert. Princeton sophomore Isabel Shipman added a third-place finish for the Tigers in the first individual event of the meet.
After a third-place finish for Claire McIlmail in the 200 free (1:50.35) and a fourth-place finish for Shirley Wang in the 100 back (57.01), sophomore Olivia Chan finished third in the 100 breast (1:04.90). Freshman Elsa Welshofer (2:01.85) and junior Beverly Nguyen (2:02.53) went 2-3 in the 200 fly.
Princeton made a big move with wins in the final two individual events. Larson won the 50 free in 23.35, while classmate Elizabeth McDonald finished second in 23.42. The Tigers actually claimed four of the top five spots, as freshman Madelyn Veith (23.57) and sophomore Katie Diller (23.59) went 4-5 respectively.
Chambers hasn't lost a diving event to any Ivy League opponent yet this season, and that didn't change Friday. She won the 3-meter event with 330.00 points, while classmate Lisa Li finished fourth with 291.10 points.
"I am excited for Caitlin and the way all our divers competed," head coach Susan Teeter said. "As a team we raced well from the early 1000 heats on and we know we have formidable rivals who will be ready to race tomorrow."
