BOX SCORE
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (1/31/15) - Princeton and Brown played to a 2-2 tie this afternoon in men's hockey at Meehan Auditorium. Junior Jonathan Liau scored the game-tying goal, while sophomore netmidner Colton Phinney made 31 saves.
A shot by Tommy Davis on the left point deflected off a player and Brown (4-16-1, 1-12-1 ECAC) started to go the other way before Liau intercepted the puck in the neutral zone and brought it back into the zone. He found Eric Robinson on the right boards and he circled into the high slot, got around his defender and shot through traffic for the score. It was Robinson's second goal of the season – his first coming in the first game of the season versus Yale at the Liberty Hockey Invitational.
Brown scored twice in 42 seconds, midway through the second period, to take the lead.
The first was a power-play goal on Princeton's (3-15-2, 1-12-1) first penalty. Freshman defender Joe Grabowski had just cleared away after shot by Nick Lappin but Matt Lorito got the puck in the corner and fed Brandon Pfeil for the one-time at the point.
With Princeton heading up the ice, a cross-ice pass from Robinson to Liau in the neutral zone was met with the sweeping stick of Joe de Concilys. As the trailing player, Sam Laffety put on the brakes and went the other way, going 1x1 with Phinney and beating him to give Brown the lead.
Liau tallied his fourth goal of the season to even the game at 2-2 at 15:47. Liau roofed a shot from the left circle with sophomore Ben Foster and senior Tucker Brockett assisting in a battle and pinch along the boards.
Princeton was able to kill off a five-minute major on Kevin Liss in the third period, that led Brown to outshot Princeton 15-7. Phinney stood tall stopping all 15 shots he faced as the Tigers forced overtime.
The teams had three shots on goal apiece in overtime but neither team was able to get one by each other's netminders, as Phinney finished with 31 saves and Brown's Tim Ernst made 28.
The Tigers went 0 for 3 on the power play, while the Bears were 1 for 3.
Princeton will travel to Colgate and Cornell next weekend.
