Berlin & Brockett Scores in Men's Hockey Loss to Union
January 09, 2015 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. (1/9/14) - Freshman Ryan Berlin and senior Tucker Brockett scored within 1:55 to halt a 258-minute scoreless streak but it wouldn't be enough as the Princeton men's hockey team lost a 5-2 game to Union on Friday, Jan. 9 at historic Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton (2-13-1, 1-10 ECAC) had been shutout in its last three games but it wouldn't be the case tonight.
The Tigers outshot the Dutchmen 10-8 in a scoreless first period, and matched them in both physicality and speed. Four penalties in the second period hampered Princeton's ability to do so in the middle frame.
Michael Vecchione had a backdoor goal on a feed from Spencer Foo to 6:23 and then assisted on his team's next two special teams goals. Daniel Ciampini, who had a three-point night with two tallies and one assist, scored a power-play goal at 15:01 with help from Vecchione and Max Novak as the team took a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
Just 21 seconds into the third period the lead would be expanded with a Matt Wilkins short-handed goal. Union (11-7-2, 4-4-1) won a face off and tried to clear the puck down the left boards before a Princeton defender stopped the puck at the blue line against the wall. Vecchione skated by, grabbed the puck and skated in on netminder Colton Phinney with Wilkins meeting Vecchione's pass on the left side.
Ciampini tallied his second with a shot from the high slot over the left shoulder of Phinney as Union grabbd a 4-0 lead at 6:07 of the third.
Berlin kept the Dutchmen from the shutout and finally lit the lamp for the Tigers at 8:40 with a delayed penalty even-strength goal. He and Jonathan Liau had a nice chance on transition but Berlin had to put on the breaks to prevent plowing into goalie Colin Stevens and wasn't able to take the pass from Liau. Instead Liau circled behind the goal and found Aaron Ave at the point, who fired on net and it was redirected by Berlin who was just getting back onto his feet.
Just 1:55 later it was Brockett scoring his first goal in 41 games with help from defenders Ave and Tommy Davis. Davis received the puck in front of the Union bench and sent it across the blue line to Ave who saw Brockett in a great position to pop in the goal gloveside on Stevens.
Ryan Scarfo added the final goal for Union at 16:44.
Princeton pulled Phinney for the extra skater with 1:35 remaining but the Tigers weren't able to do any more damage.
Phinney finished the game with 27 saves, while Stevens stopped 25 shots.
Princeton was 1 for 4 on the power play and 6 for 7 on the penalty kill.
The Tigers hosts Rensselaer tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Engineers lost 4-2 to Quinnipiac earlier this evening.
