PRINCETON, N.J. (11/11/15) - Men's hockey season officially begins this weekend at Hobey Baker Rink when Princeton hosts on Dartmouth and No. 7 Harvard. Game times have 7 p.m., face-offs.
EYE ON THE TIGERSPrinceton takes to Hobey Baker Rink after opening the ECAC season on the road at Cornell and Colgate. The Tigers lost both games by a one-goal margin, the Cornell game being decided in the final minute. Princeton went 1-1 at the Capital City Classic in Trenton to break open the season, a loss to Yale in the late stages of the third, followed by a win over Maine. Junior Ben Foster, sophomore Eric Robinson and freshman Max Véronneau all have two goals apiece. Foster scored in back-to-back games against Maine and Cornell, while Véronneau scored both of his against Cornell. Robinson is credited with the last Princeton goal, the tally in the 2-1 game at Colgate. Sophomore David Hallisey and freshman Alex Riche have two assists each. Junior Colton Phinney has a .943 save percentage - third best in the league and a 2.28 goals against average - 5th best in the league.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Like Princeton, Dartmouth is 1-3 in this early season. The Big Green's win was a 7-3 game over Brown at home last weekend, which was followed up by a 4-2 loss to Yale. Dartmouth was swept by Harvard in the season opening home-and-home series, 7-0 and 5-2. Junior Troy Crema sits atop the scoring column with five points on a team-best four assists and one goal. Seniors Jack Barre and Nick Bligh have scored three goals apiece, and junior Grant Opperman has three assists. Three goaltenders have been used by the Big Green. Senior Charles Grant has played the most minutes and has a 4.09 GAA and a .789 save percentage. Senior James Kruger has a 5.34 GAA and a .818 save percentage in just under 90 minutes of action, while sophomore Devin Buffalo has seen about 30 minutes of play and allowed two goals on 14 shots.
THE PRINCETON/DARTMOUTH SERIES
Dartmouth owns a 100-86-14 edge in the all-time series with Princeton. The teams met four times last season, as they met in the quarterfinal round. Princeton earned a 5-2 win over Dartmouth in the very first meeting of the series, in 1907. Senior Jonathan Liau has five points in eight games, while senior Mike Ambrosia has four points in seven games. Junior Colton Phinney has a .909 save percentage making 110 saves on 121 shots.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
The Crimson are ranked No. 7 in the latest USCHO poll, sixth in the USA Today poll, with a 3-0-1 mark. Following two wins over Dartmouth, Harvard defeated Brown 5-2 and tied Yale 2-2 at home last weekend. Senior Jimmy Vesey (NSH) has eight points on four goals and four assists. Senior Kyle Criscuolo and freshman Ryan Donato (BOS) have each scored three goals and two assists. Juniors Alexander Kerfoot (NJD) and Sean Malone (BUF) add five points as well - with Malone's all coming by way of assist, a category he leads. Harvard uses a two-goalie system with sophomore Merrick Madsen (PHI) and freshman Michael Lackey. Madsen is 2-0 with a 1.00 GAA and a .956 save percentage, while Lackey is 1-0-1 with a 1.92 GAA and a .931 save percentage.
THE PRINCETON/HARVARD SERIES
Harvard leads the all-time series with Princeton 150-57-11, since the team's first met in 1902. The Crimson have won the last four meetings - with the Tigers' last win on March 21, 2013 that secured Princeton home ice for the playoffs. Seniors Jonathan Liau and Kyle Rankin have three points against Harvard, while junior Colton Phinney has made 104 stops on 116 shots.
