Princeton Opens Ivy Season With Home Victories Over Penn, Cornell
November 21, 2015 | Women's Swimming and Diving
COMPLETE RESULTS
The Princeton women's swimming and diving team will be spending plenty of time at DeNunzio Pool this year, and they opened their home season on the right note. The Tigers swept an Ivy League tri-meet Saturday, defeating Cornell 213-87 and Penn 166-134.
Following a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay, senior tri-captain Nikki Larson (1:50.65) held off freshman teammate Isabel Reis (1:51.36) to win the 200 free. Two events later, junior tri-captain Olivia Chan led a 2-3-4 finish in the 100 breast in 1:04.19. Freshmen Janet Zhao and Karen Zhang were the next two finishers, another sign that this new crop of breaststrokers will be strong performers for Princeton this season.
Sophomore Maddy Veith took second in the 50 free (23.59), just ahead of reigning Ivy League champion Liz McDonald (23.76), and Larson followed by finishing second in the 100 in 51.34. Veith (51.42) and McDonald (51.67) followed Larson to the wall to give Princeton three of the top four finishers.
Sophomore Lindsay Temple won the 200 back in 2:01.61, while freshman Joanna Curry took second in 2:02.92; fellow freshmen Zhao (2:21.34) and Lindsey Swartz (2:21.48) finished 3-4 in the 200 breast. Another freshman, Monica McGrath, took sixth in the 500 (5:05.28).
Larson came back with another strong performance in the 100 fly (2nd, 55.71), while Morgan Karetnick finished third in 55.89.
Freshman Carolyn MacFarlane was impressive in her debut on the DeNunzio diving boards, holding off junior teammate Lisa Li by the slimmest of margins to win the 1-meter event. MacFarlane (267.40) and Li (267.05) finished 1-2 in the event, and both qualified for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championship with those scores. Li also took care of qualifying for the 3-meter championship, as she won that event with 284.15 points.
Chan (2:05.29), senior co-captain Beverly Nguyen (2:05.29) and Reis (2:06.24) finished 2-3-4 in the 200 IM to complete the individual swimming portion of the meet, while the quartet of Larson, Mallory Remick, Reis and Veith won the 400 free relay in 3:27.56.
