PRINCETON, N.J. (11/4/15) - The ECAC Hockey and Ivy League season begins on Friday when Princeton travels to Lynah Rink to face Cornell at 7 p.m., on Nov. 6. The road trip continues with a 7 p.m., game at Colgate on Saturday, Nov. 7.
EYE ON THE TIGERSPrinceton is 1-1 on the season after last weekend's Capital City Classic opened the fresh season. The Tigers fell to Yale 3-1 in Game 1 and rebounded with a 3-1 win over Maine in the consolation game. Princeton and Yale were tied for all but four minutes of the game, before the go-ahead goal at 16:56 of the third followed by an empty-net tally. Against Maine, Princeton grabbed a 2-0 lead with goals 3:13 apart in the second and added an empty-netter to seal the victory. Princeton had 10 players record a single point during the weekend, with four different goal scorers, including senior Kyle Rankin, junior Ben Foster and sophomores Eric Robinson and Joe Grabowski. Junior Colton Phinney made 79 saves and has a .963 save percentage - fourth best in the league - and a 1.51 goals against average.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell is 2-0 after a sweep of Niagara in a home-and-home series last weekend. The Big Red pulled out a 3-2 overtime game on the road before a 4-0 shutout at Lynah. Junior Jeff Kubiak has scored twice and adds one assist, while Anthony Angello (PIT) has two helpers and a goal to match Kubiak's three points. Freshman Mitch Vanderlaan and three defenders: Holden Anderson, Ryan Bliss and Alec McCrea all have two points. Junior Mitch Gillam played both games in goal and has a 0.99 GAA, the best goals against in the league, and a .955 save percentage.
THE PRINCETON/CORNELL SERIES
Princeton and Cornell split the series last year with each team winning on its home ice. In the all-time history its Cornell that leads, 84-54-8. Senior Kyle Rankin leads the Tigers in scoring against Cornell with three points, including two goals at Lynah last year. Junior Colton Phinney has made 65 stops on 69 shots in the series.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Playing in the first college hockey game of the year, over one month ago on October 3, the Raiders have a five more games under their belts. Colgate is 3-4 overall and most recently dropped two games to reigning national champion Providence at home. The Brothers Spink lead the team in scoring with Tyson scoring a team-high six assists and adding three goals for nine points. Tylor has three goals and four assists for seven pints. Seniors Mike Borkowski and Darcy Murphy along with sophomore Mike Panowyk each have six points. Borkowski has scored the most goals on the team with five, while all of Panowyk's points have come from assists. Junior Charlie Finn owns every decision and has started in six games. He has a .900 save percentage and a 3.58 GAA. Sophomore Zac Hamilton has spent 42 minutes in goal.
THE PRINCETON/COLGATE SERIES
Colgate has won the last four meetings in the series and leads it 52-46-6 since it began in 1935. Senior Mike Ambrosia has two goals and two assists in the series to pace the Tigers in the series. Phinney has made 137 saves for .907 save percentage.
