PRINCETON, N.J. (11/6/15) - No. 10 Princeton was stunned by two goals in the final 1:16 as the Tigers lost their first game of the season 2-1 to Cornell on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
Big Red senior Taylor Woods scored two goals, one short-handed, with under two minutes left after Cornell's Cassandra Poudrier was sent off for interference with 2:27 remaining; giving her team the improbable 2-1 win in the Tigers' home opener.
Princeton opened the scoring with a power-play goal goal by sophomore Kiersten Falck with 5:04 left in the first with assists by defenders Molly Strabley and Kimiko Marinacci. The Tigers outshot the visiting Big Red 10-6 in the opening period, due in part to three power plays, but Cornell gradually started to control the play once they started to stay out of the penalty box.
Princeton sophomore goalie Alysia DaSilva, making her second consecutive start after a 3-0 shutout of Brown last Saturday, stopped 28 of 30 shots and looked like she might get her third career shutout before Woods' late game heroics.
Cornell had a 10-7 advantage in shots in the third period, with DaSilva making several big stops including a save on Kaitlin Doering from right in front with 4:27 to play. The Tigers looked like they would escape with the win when Poudrier was sent off but Woods had other ideas.
The senior forced a turnover and then tucked in her own rebound with 1:16 remaining. With the game seemingly headed to overtime sophomore defenseman Erin O'Connor sent a perfect pass from her own end to a breaking Woods for the game-winning score with 21 seconds left in regulation.
Cornell finished the game with 30-21 advantage in shots.
Princeton was 1 for 6 on the power play and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill.
The Tigers host Colgate tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. The Raiders played to a 0-0 tie with No. 7 Quinnipiac this evening.
