PRINCETON, N.J. (11/7/15) - Freshman Karlie Lund scored two goals and senior Kimberly Newell stopped 32 of 34 shots as the Princeton women's hockey team bounced back from a last minute loss to Cornell on Friday night, with a 3-2 win over Colgate at historic Hobey Baker Rink.
The Tigers scored three straight goals after Colgate's Annika Zalewski opened the scoring with a first period goal. Lund scored her first goal off an assist from freshman Stephanie Sucharda with 1:12 left in the opening period as the team's headed into the locker room's tied at 1-1.
After being outshot 12-8 and spending long stretches in their own end in the first the Tigers dominated in the middle period, holding an 18-7 shot advantage and scoring the only two goals of the period.
Junior Kelsey Koelzer put the Tigers ahead for good with her third goal of the season 39 seconds into the middle period. She finished off a nice passing play from junior Hilary Lloyd and freshman Kimiko Marinacci. The two teams traded power-play opportunities early in the period and after a brief stint of 4x4 play the Tigers capitalized on the second of their five power-play chances. Princeton finished 1 for 5 with the extra skater while the Tigers were a perfect 4 for 4 in killing penalties.
Marinacci picked up the second of her two assists on the third Tigers goal. Capturing the puck in the neutral zone shortly after Koelzer's minor penalty expired, the freshman defender drove deep into the Colgate zone before distributing the puck to sophomore Emily Achterkirch. Senior goalie Ashlynne Rando stopped an initial shot by Achterkirch, but Lund was able to put the rebound home for her third goal of the season.
That goal would come in handy after Colgate's Shae Labbe scored with 6:20 left to make it a 3-2 game.
Featuring a young lineup with seven freshman and six sophomores, the Raiders turned up the heat late in the game, with Newell making a big stop on center Shannon Ormel with 4:36 left.
Colgatelused its timeout with 2:16 left in regulation to pull Rando for an extra attacker with the face-off in the Princeton end. The Tigers stood tal and did not allow the Raiders to generate a scoring chance.
With the win the Tigers, who entered the weekend ranked 10th, raise their record to 5-1 (3-1 ECAC Hockey) while Colgate is now 4-2-4 (0-1-3 ECAC Hockey). Rando stopped 31 of 34 shots in net for the Raiders.
The Tigers play a home-and-home series with Quinnipiac next weekend, traveling to Connecticut for a game on Friday afternoon before returning to Baker Rink for a game on Saturday. Both games with the Bobcats start at 3:00 p.m.
