HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/7/15) – The Princeton men's hockey team outshot Colgate by a hefty margin, 12-5, in the third period in a fight for the equalizer but the Raiders stayed on top in a 2-1 game at Starr Rink.
Princeton took all three of the first period's penalties and gave up just a single goal, while going 3 for 3 on the penalty kill.
Tyson Spink gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead at 7:21 of the first with help from Mike Borkowski. Borkowski skated into the left circle, fired on Colton Phinney and got the puck back off the pad and continued around the back of the cage. He pushed the puck in front where Spink collected and skated across the crease with a backhanded flip into the back of the net.
Sophomore Eric Robinson knotted the game at 1-1 at 11:39 of the second period with help from freshman Alex Riche. Robinson intercepted Mike Panowyk's no-look pass in the neutral zone and made his way into the center of the sheet, finding Riche at the blue line. Riche's shot was deflected by a defender but Robinson was still in pursuit as took the puck on his tape and went five hole on Charlie Finn.
Darcy Murphy gave Raiders the go-ahead with five seconds left in the second period. The goal came just eight seconds after Colgate returned to full strength on its third penalty of the second period. Murphy weaved his way from end to end and put the winner over the left shoulder of Phinney.
Both goaltenders finished with 30 saves apiece. Finn's best save came five minutes into the second period on a Tommy Davis shot – extending the right pad at the last second. In the next minute, Phinney made a pad save on a shot from point as he defended without a stick after it got knocked away.
“The opportunities we generated in the second and third after being in the box for three straight times in the first, is something that we were waiting for. The systems, the structure, that migrated to just playing hockey,” Princeton head coach Ron Fogarty said. “This weekend there was a lot a positive to take from it.Being down by two, coming back, a late goal, to having control in the majority of the second and third period of relentless forecheck. It's more along than the staff thought we'd be. The great senior leadership that bring the young guys along immediately and trust in the young guys and incorporate them right away. So this is two games where you sit back and think we could have won them or tied them and that's a big step for this program.”
Princeton hosts Dartmouth and Harvard next weekend, Nov. 13 & 14 in the home opener. Both games will be at 7 p.m., at Hobey Baker Rink.
