• Princeton hasn't faced Maryland since the 2001-02 season, and it'll be the second time in the last three meetings that the teams will play in the arena now called Royal Farms Arena. Maryland, then No. 5 in the AP poll, topped the Tigers 81-58 on Dec. 19, 1998 in Baltimore. Just three years later, on Dec. 2, 2001, Princeton came within eight points of Maryland, which was again ranked No. 5 in the AP, at what's now called the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.
• Princeton broke an 11-game skid against Big Ten teams with an 81-79 overtime win at Penn State two seasons ago, getting what was the team's first win over a Big Ten opponent since defeating Wisconsin in 1985.
• Princeton is ranked No. 2 in the Ivy League in both scoring offense (77.0 ppg, Columbia 77.9) and scoring defense (65.4 ppg allowed, Harvard 63.6), but Princeton is only fifth in shooting percentate (.425) while the team's field goal percentage allowed (.401, second behind Harvard at .379) more closely aligns with its scoring defense rank. The Tigers have helped make up for that by having the second-best rebounding margin in the Ivy (+8.1, Yale +10.3) and the best rebounding offense (42.9) in the league.
• Entering Tuesday's games, Princeton was in the top 10 percent nationally (top 34) in five statistical categories, including defensive rebounds per game (10th, 31.00), fewest fouls (ninth, 128), fewest turnovers (11th, 82), 3s per game (27th, 10.0), and total rebounds per game (25th, 42.86). Amir Bell, Henry Caruso, Pete Miller and Spencer Weisz were all in the top 250 in a statistical category, with Spencer Weisz's 30th-ranked 3.44 assist-to-turnover ratio as the top-ranked stat in that group of players.
• Until the Lipscomb game, Devin Cannady was ranked No. 1 in the nation in free-throw percentage. A player has to make 2.5 FTs per game played to remain eligible for the ranking, and since Cannady hasn't been to the line in the last two games, his 17 for 17 standing after the first five games no longer met the average. If Cannady takes and makes at least three free throws against Liberty, he'll get back atop the rankings.
• Princeton's 77.0 ppg average isn't far from the team record for a season-ending scoring average of 79.74, set in 1971-72.
• Under Mitch Henderson, Princeton has scored 90 points in a game five times. That's more than all other post-Pete Carril coaches combined and the fourth-most under a coach in program history. Princeton scored 90+ 21 times under Pete Carril, 18 times under Butch van Breda Kolff and 11 times under Cappy Cappon.
• After shooting .329 (46-140) at Stony Brook and Saint Joseph's after beginning the season with a .485 (116-239) clip over the first four games, Princeton got back above .400 at Lipscomb, going 27 for 66 for a .409 average.
• Princeton's juniors (Caruso, Cook, Miller, Rayner, Weisz) have scored 323 of the team's 539 points, or 60 percent. Players who are able to return next year have scored 99.6 percent of the team's points (537 of 539).
• Among those juniors is Henry Caruso, who has matched or set his career high in scoring twice already this season, putting in a career-best 27 last week against FDU. He is averaging 17.0 points per game on the season and has scored a total of 119 points, closing in on his total from all of last season (176). He scored three points as a rookie. Caruso has surged into the team lead in rebounding at 7.9 rpg and has three double-doubles this season, the first three of his career.
• Caruso's classmate, Pete Miller, has 45 rebounds through the first seven games and is past the halfway mark to his total from last season, 74. Miller averaged 2.3 boards a game as a rookie and 2.4 as a sophomore but is averaging 6.4 this year.
• The last time Princeton beat a team ranked sixth or better by the AP, as Maryland is, was on Jan. 3, 1977, when No. 2 Notre Dame came to Jadwin Gym and lost 76-62. The last time Princeton beat a top-six team away from home was on Jan. 2, 1967, when the Tigers beat No. 3 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, 91-81. Princeton has six wins in 44 all-time meetings with AP top-six teams.

• Liberty was picked in the final spot in the 11-team Big South's preseason poll, voted on by both coaches and media members.
• All three of the Flames' wins this season have come against non-Division I programs in Division III Covenant College and Summit University and Central Penn College of the USCAA. The Flames are 0-8 against D-I programs so far on the season.
• The Bisons are 2-8 against Division I opponents this season, getting wins over Santa Clara in the opener and Florida Atlantic on Nov. 22. The team's last four Division I opponents have all topped 80 points against Lipscomb, led by the 105 scored by the Bisons' Nashville rival Belmont, and Princeton averages 76.8 ppg.
• Liberty's coach is Ritchie McKay, who has served as head coach at Portland State, Colorado State, Oregon State and New Mexico in addition to Liberty. It's McKay's second stint at Liberty, coaching there for two seasons from 2007-09 and leading the Flames to a CIT quarterfinals appearance in 2009. From there, McKay went to serve as the associate head coach at Virginia under Tony Bennett before returning to skipper the Liberty program this season.
• Against Division I opponents, Liberty's foes have a 12.8 ppg scoring advantage, are shooting .483 from the field and .372 from beyond the arc, and hold a 7.2 rpg rebounding edge. As he is in the Flames' 11 games overall, Evan Maxwell is Liberty's leading scorer, averaging 13.9 ppg overall and 12.9 ppg against Division I foes.
• Maryland coach Mark Turgeon spent a year working not too far from Princeton, serving as an assistant under his college coach, Larry Brown, with the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1997-98 season before taking over as the head coach at Jacksonville State in Alabama. Turgeon and Princeton coach Mitch Henderson arrived at their current posts around the same time, both starting for the 2011-12 season.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his fifth season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 79-48. Under Henderson, Princeton is 44-11 at home, 37-19 in the Ivy League, and 23-5 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 63-16 when leading at the half under Henderson. Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first four campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Leuhring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04). Henderson is in seventh place on the Princeton all-time wins list. Bill Carmody, who was a Princeton assistant for Henderson's first two seasons and head coach for Henderson's last two, is in sixth place with 92 wins. Carmody hired Henderson as an assistant coach at Northwestern in 2000, where Henderson remained for 11 seasons until coming to Princeton. Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95. Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14. Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield). |
