• The Tigers are 4-0 for the first time since the 1997-98 season, Mitch Henderson's senior year, when the team started 7-0. Saturday's game will be Princeton's first of the season played outside Mercer County, as the Tigers opened at Rider before hosting three games on campus, against Saint Peter's in Dillon Gym and against Lafayette and FDU in Jadwin.
• Princeton will be facing a Stony Brook team that has faced three Division I opponents, going 1-2 against those foes. Stony Brook rarely trailed at No. 17 Vanderbilt (6-1) on Nov. 19, leading by as many as 10 points with 15 minutes to go. Stony Brook trailed by two with the ball and the seconds ticking down before Carson Puriefoy tied it with a second left. Vandy won in OT, 79-72. Stony Brook went on to drop a tight game to Western Kentucky (4-3) 67-66 two days later. Stony Brook's last D-I opponent was Loyola (Md.) (1-6), and the Seawolves rolled past the Greyhounds 76-63.
• This will be Princeton's first trip to Long Island outside of New York City since playing at Hofstra in 1979.
• Princeton and Stony Brook have met only once, last season in Jadwin Gym. The Seawolves return 52 of their 64 points, minus 10 from Chris Braley off the bench but bringing back Jameel Warney (12 pts., 13 reb.) and Rayshaun McGrew (18 pts., 10 reb.). Princeton brings back 53 of its 77 points, minus 11 from Hans Brase and 13 off the bench from Clay Wilson.
• The SBU duo of Warney and McGrew helped the Seawolves outrebound Princeton 37-24, but the Tigers have shown themselves a stronger rebounding team this year. The Stony Brook game was Princeton's ninth of the year last season, and Princeton had been outrebounded five times over those first nine games. On the season to that point, Princeton was outrebounded 33.1 rpg to 30.1 rpg. So far this season, Princeton hasn't been outrebounded in any of its first four games and is outrebounding foes by an average of 12.0 rpg. Henry Caruso (7.5 rpg) and Pete Miller (7.0) have been pacing the Tigers on the glass while Spencer Weisz (6.0) and Steven Cook (5.5) are also grabbing more than a handful of boards a game.
• Three-point shooting also helped the Tigers win last year's meeting with Stony Brook, as Princeton was 12 of 26 (.462) from beyond the arc and Stony Brook was 5 of 17 (.294). The Seawolves allowed their three D-I opponents a .327 clip so far, but the variance has been wide. Western Kentucky made 9 of 14 (.643) while Loyola made 2 of 17 (.118).
• Steven Cook had a career-high 28 points in the Stony Brook game last year, hitting five 3-pointers. He was one of Princeton's starters, along with Hans Brase, Pete Miller, Amir Bell and Spencer Weisz, with four of the five, except Brase, as probable starters again Saturday. Those five had 62 of the 77 points and 166 of the 200 minutes.
• Princeton has put up 195 points over its last two games, scoring 104 against Lafayette and 91 against FDU. It's the first time since 1974 that Princeton has scored 90 or more in back-to-back games, and the first time since 1972 that Princeton has surpassed 90 in back-to-back games. Princeton has never scored 90 in three straight games, and Stony Brook doesn't look like an opponent that will likely give up 90 points. The Seawolves last allowed 90 points against Toledo (103) on Nov. 22, 2013 in a neutral-site event in Detroit and last allowed 90 at home against Brown (90) on Dec. 30, 2003.
• Princeton looked to have ditched its free throw woes with an 11-for-13 (.846) performance last week against Lafayette, but the Tigers' struggles from the stripe returned against FDU, going 20 of 34 (.588). Princeton is shooting .608 from the line this season. Stony Brook has also left points at the line so far, shooting .636.
• Princeton has been strong from the field so far this season, shooting .485 and never shooting below .400 in any game. The Tigers are .396 from beyond the arc, making at least nine threes in three of four games on the season and hitting 17 against Lafayette. The Tigers have tried as few as 18 threes against Saint Peter's and as many as 35 against Lafayette.
• Princeton's juniors (Caruso, Cook, Miller, Rayner, Weisz) have scored 186 of the team's 334 points, or 55.7 percent. Players who are able to return next year have scored 99.4 percent of the team's points.
• Among those juniors is Henry Caruso, who has matched or set his career high in scoring twice already this season, putting in a career-best 27 last time out against FDU. He is averaging 18.0 points per game on the season and has scored a total of 72 points, nearly half his total from all of last season (176). He scored three points as a rookie. Caruso has surged into the team lead in rebounding at 7.5 rpg, posting back-to-back double-doubles with 10 boards apiece, his first two career double-doubles.
• Caruso's classmate, Pete Miller, has 28 rebounds through the first four games and is nearly halfway to his total from last season, 74. Miller averaged 2.3 boards a game as a rookie and 2.4 as a sophomore but is averaging 7.0 this year.

• Stony Brook was the preseason favorite in the America East coaches poll, getting seven first-place votes and 63 poll points to two first-place votes for runner-up Albany, which had 55 poll points.
• Jameel Warney is a two-time America East Player of the Year and led the league in scoring (16.4 ppg) and rebounding (11.7 ppg) last season. Carson Puriefoy was also a first-team all-leaguer a season ago and averaged 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds a game.
• Seven players started at least 10 games for Stony Brook last season and all are back, with Warner, Puriefoy, Rayshaun McGrew and Roland Nyama each starting at least 34 of the team's 35 games.
• Stony Brook coach Steve Pikiell has been at his post since 2005. Like the last head coach Princeton faced, FDU's Greg Herenda, Pikiell is a former Yale assistant, though the two did not overlap. Pikiell was at Yale from 1993-95, two years before Herenda arrived there.
• Stony Brook was also the America East preseason favorite last season. The Seawolves drew the third seed in the 2015 America East tournament, defeating Binghamton and Vermont to reach the final at Albany. The Great Danes won 51-50, gaining the AE's NCAA bid while Stony Brook played in the CBI and fell to Mercer in the first round.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his fifth season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 78-46. Under Henderson, Princeton is 44-11 at home, 37-19 in the Ivy League, and 23-5 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 62-16 when leading at the half under Henderson. Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first four campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Leuhring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04). Henderson is in seventh place on the Princeton all-time wins list. Bill Carmody, who was a Princeton assistant for Henderson's first two seasons and head coach for Henderson's last two, is in sixth place with 92 wins. Carmody hired Henderson as an assistant coach at Northwestern in 2000, where Henderson remained for 11 seasons until coming to Princeton. Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95. Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14. Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield). |
