PRINCETON, N.J. (2/19/15) - The No. 15-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team opens the 2015 season hosting No. 9 Loyola at noon at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium in the first game of a double header with the men's team.
Eye on the Tigers
Princeton went 12-7 last year as the Ivy League co-champion and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to Virginia, 13-11.
The Tigers return seven starters and 67% of its point production. Key losses include: Ivy League Midfielder of the Year Sarah Lloyd and All-America defender Colleen Smith as well.
Leading the offense is All-America Erin McMunn, who has led the team in scoring the last two seasons. She finished the 2014 season with 57 points on 44 goals and 13 assists and tallied her 100th career goal as a junior. All-region selection, Erin Slifer will key up the midfield. She was second on the team in scoring a year ago with 28 goals and 24 assists. The pair will most likely take the majority of the draw controls this year, and combined for 51 wins last year. Sophomores Olivia Hompe and Anna Doherty, along with junior Anya Gersoff should provide offensive spark as well, as each finished with 20+ points last year. Senior Annie Woehling will be back in the cage this year. She was 10-3 last year with an 8.49 goals against average and a .444 save percentage. In front of the goal, Princeton brings back junior Liz Bannantine, who led the team in caused turnovers and was second in ground balls. Sophomore Amanda Leavell showed her strength in the position and in draws, finishing third on the team with 23 wins. The Tigers also bring in eight freshmen who are expected to step in right away.
The Series
Princeton owns an 8-4 edge in the all-time series with Loyola. The teams resumed the rivalry after a four-year hiatus last year, meeting in the season opener. The Greyhounds took that game, 15-10.
Scouting the Greyhounds
Loyola ended the 2014 season with a 15-6 overall record, falling to Boston College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, by an 8-3 score. The Greyhounds won the Patriot League title to earn the automatic bid to the tournament. Four members of the team garnered All-America honors at the end of the season, and three of them return this season.
The Greyhounds return lead six of their top seven scorers including leading scorer and All-America Annie Thomas. Thomas finished the lead with 79 points on 40 goals and 39 assists. Though the team lost leading goal scorer Marlee Paton, they return Hannah Schmidt who had 49 points, All-America Taryn VanThof with 40, as well as Kara Burke and Molly Hulseman who had 37 points apiece. All-American defender Maddy Lesher will take her place in front of goalkeeper Molly Wolf. Wolf started in all 21 games last year and had an 8.52 GAA and a .469 save percentage.
The team got some more bonding experience with an international trip in June, to London and South Africa.
