George Mason fought off set balls in two different sets and claimed a wild 34-32 win in the second en route to a wild 3-1 victory over the 14th-ranked Princeton men's volleyball team Friday evening in Dillon Gym.
The matchup, which featured two of the EIVA's postseason teams last year, swung in the second set. Princeton controlled the opener 25-19 and held five set balls in the second, but the Tigers couldn't convert on any. Mason drew even at 32-32 and won the final two points to take the set.
With momentum on its side, Mason took control midway through the third for a 25-19 victory, but Princeton fought back in the fourth to force extra points. After fighting off one match ball, the Tigers had a set ball in the fourth, but Mason fought it off to even the set at 25-25. The Patriots defense took control from there, recording back-to-back blocks to clinch the victory.
Senior Cody Kessel and sophomore Junior Oboh both recorded 15 kills for the Tigers, who fell to 6-6, 3-1 in the EIVA. Oboh added seven blocks and hit .379 in the loss, while teammate Devin Stearns had 10 kills. Senior Tony Ensbury had 11 digs in the loss, while sophomore Chris Kennedy paced the offense with 40 assists.
George Mason was led by junior Paco Velez, who had a match-high 21 kills.
Princeton will return to Dillon Gym next weekend for home matches against Juniata (Friday, 7) and NJIT (Saturday, 7).
