CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (2/28/15) - No. 16 Harvard skated to a 5-0 win over Harvard in the regular-season finale on Saturday at Bright-Landry Hockey Center. The Crimson took a 3-0 lead in the first and tacked on two more goals in the final frame.
The pairings are now set for the ECAC Hockey playoffs next weekend. No. 12 seed Princeton (4-21-3, 2-18-2 ECAC) will travel to No. 5 seed Dartmouth for the first round. No. 6 Harvard (15-11-3, 11-8-3 ECAC) will host No. 11 Brown.
The Crimson converted on their first power-play opportunity of the game at 6:49. Jimmy Vesey scored his first of two special-team goals when he redirected a Kyle Criscuolo shot from the right point.Tyler Moy tallied back-to-back goals at 9:05 and 17:15, his first a backhanded goal and the second after a Princeton turnover in the neutral zone.
The Tigers outshot the Crimson in each of the final two periods but couldn't solve goaltender Steve Michalek. Senior Aaron Ave had a nice rip from the left point that slipped through traffic but took a bounce of the chest of Michalek. Princeton had the final scoring chance of the middle frame, a great setup by the Tigers line of Tucker Brockett-Kyle Rankin-Ryan Siiro, but again the rubber wouldn't go.
It was an even tougher hill to climb in the third when Princeton took two straight early penalties.
The four straight man-advantage minutes gave the Crimson a boost and they used it to their advantage as Vesey expanded the lead with a short-handed goal and his 23rd of the season. Just over two minutes later Devin Tringale scored his first goal of the season on the doorstep.
Michalek earned the shutout making 27 saves, as Princeton was outshot by just one, 28-27. Sophomore Colton Phinney made 23 saves for the Tigers. One of his highlight reel saves came in the second period when Brian Hart was in the box and Criscuolo was denied on the odd-man rush.
Princeton was 0 for 3 on the power play and Harvard was 1 for 4.
