Women Rally For Thrilling 151-149 Win In NYC, Share Regular Season Crown
February 06, 2015 | Women's Swimming and Diving
You have to give the Princeton women this; they have a flair for the dramatic.
Six days after winning the 400 free relay to post a 150-150 tie at reigning Ivy League champion Harvard, the Tigers needed to win the same event to end a three-year losing streak to Columbia.
And, once again, the Tigers were up for the challenge.
The quartet of Mallory Remick, Elizabeth McDonald, Madelyn Veith and Nikki Larson posted a Uris Pool record time of 4:24.91 to top Columbia by more than a half second to win the crucial final event in a 151-149 victory over the Lions. Princeton needed to add at least a third-place finish in the event, and the team of Delaney Johnson, Kathleen Mulligan, Reese Iriondo and Isabel Shipman finished third in 3:32.76.
The victory clinches a share of the Ivy League regular season dual meet title with Harvard; the official Ivy League championship will be determined in two weeks when the eight teams meet at Blodgett Pool for the Ivy Championships.
Princeton got individual wins from Larson, Shipman and Rebecca Fleming, as well as another diving sweep from sophomore Caitlin Chambers. The reigning 3-meter Ivy champion went undefeated against Ivy competition throughout the 2014-15 season.
Chambers opened the meet by scoring 318.31 points off the 3-meter board, while classmates Lisa Li (291.00) and Larkin Papa (270.61) followed in second and third. Chambers (267.37) and Li (262.57) also went 1-2 in a tightly contested 1-meter competition later in the meet.
Fleming built off her victory at H-Y-P by winning the 1000 in 10:06.58, while Shipman took second in 10:06.90. Larson and Remick followed with a 1-2 finish of their own; Larson won the 200 free in 1:50.74, while Remick finished in 1:51.47.
Junior Beverly Nguyen took second in the 200 fly (2:02.34), while Veith took a runner-up finish in the 50 free (23.71) and Larson finished second in the 100 free (50.81).
After freshman Lindsay Temple took second in the 200 back (2:04.20) and Olivia Chan placed third in the 200 breast (2:22.27), Princeton got big points in the 500. Shipman won the event in 5:01.03, while freshman Elsa Welshofer took second in 5:03.77. Katie Diller followed with a second-place finish in 100 fly (55.26), while Nguyen took second in the 200 IM (2:05.29).
