Charlottesville, Va. (3/14/15) - The good news about the Princeton women's lacrosse team's trip to Charlottesville, the sight of its first loss of the season, is that the Tigers have no time to dwell on it.
While a busy week for Princeton, now 4-1, may have started out with a disappointment, there are two more chances now, both at home, to turn the season's momentum back around.
No. 10 Princeton fell 18-11 to No. 8 Virginia Saturday afternoon. As soon as the final whistle sounded, it was time for Princeton to start thinking about Wednesday afternoon's home game against Penn State, whom Princeton defeated in the NCAA tournament last year, and a much-improved Harvard team, who comes to Sherrerd Field Saturday.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead with sophomore Olivia Hompe and junior Anya Gersoff scoring within 33 seconds of each other 10 minutes into the game. During that time, sophomore Ellie DeGarmo made five saves against the Cavaliers.
Virginia (3-4, 0-2 ACC) broke through at 17:58 and went on an 8-1 run to close out the first half. Kasey Behr led the charge with scored three of her teams goals, while Liza Blue scored two and had one assist.
The Cavaliers kept things going in the second and with a 4-1 run, took a 12-4 lead at 17:48.
The Tigers regrouped following a timeout and outscored the Cavaliers the remainder of the game but ran out of time as they tried to play catch up.
Senior Erin McMunn and Gersoff scored nearly a minute apart to make it 12-6. Five minutes later Blue responded with a goal, but Princeton got right back at it on the other end with goals from senior Erin Slifer and junior Stephanie Paloscio within 20 seconds of each other to make it a five-goal game, 13-8.
The comeback was halted with a 3-0 run for Virginia, 16-8, pushing the game further out of reach for the Tigers with less than six minutes on the clock.
The Orange & Black weren't going to go away without a fight. Sophomores Lauren Steidl and Amanda Leavell scored their first collegiate goals and Gersoff tallied her third of the game during a three-goal Princeton run, 16-11.
The Tigers needed more goals than it had minutes, however, with just 3:21 left on the scoreboard.
The final two draw controls were won by the Hoos and led to two more Virginia goals as the final score settled at 18-11.
Princeton has been dominant in draw controls in the first four games this season, winning 72 percent of the draws (50-19). Today Virginia had the edge in that category, 19-12.
Virginia outshot Princeton 36-28 and was a perfect 13 for 13 on clears. Princeton was 10 for 13 on clears and went 1 for 5 from the arc, though Virginia was just 2 for 7 itself.
Kasey Behr and Liza Blue both had four goals and one assist apiece, while Casey Bockelet had one goal and three assists. Courtney Swan and Kelly Reese scored three times each and Mary Alati scored both her team's free-position goals and added one helper. Rachel Vander Kolk made just four saves in goal.Gersoff tallied a hat trick, while Paloscio had two goals and one assists.
