PRINCETON, N.J. (3/16/15) - No. 13-ranked Princeton begins a four-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts No. 11 Penn State at 1 p.m. The teams met twice last season with the Tigers sending the Nittany Lions home in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
The Tigers are coming off of their first loss of the season, an 18-11 game at No. 8 Virginia. Thus far the team is 2-0 when playing here at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. Sophomore Olivia Hompe leads the team in scoring with 12 goals and five assists for 17 points. The duo of seniors Erin Slifer and Erin McMunn follow with 13 points apiece. Junior Stephanie Paloscio has six goals and four assists for 10 points. McMunn and sophomore Anna Doherty have been the strong arms in the center circle with 14 and 10 draw controls, respectively. Slifer is the team leader in ground balls with nine and caused turnovers with five. Sophomore Ellie DeGarmo is 4-1 in goal and has a .533 save percentage and an 8.15 goals against average.
THE SERIES
Princeton leads the all-time series with Penn State, 22-13 since the teams first met in 1982. Last year the team's split with Penn State winning a 13-12 game during the regular season before Princeton won 16-13 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Erin McMunn has 16 points in four games against the Nittany Lions, while Erin Slifer has 11 in four games.
SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS
Penn State is 5-2 on the season and ranked in top national polls. The team most recently defeated Vanderbilt 17-10 on Sunday afternoon. The team's two losses were one-goal games to Virginia and James Madison. Senior Maggie McCormick has a large lead in the scoring column over her teammates with 29 points on 11 goals and a team-high 18 assists. Senior Kelly Lechner has 16 points on 13 goals and three assists, while sophomore Steph Lazo is the leader in goals with 14 and adds one assist for 15 points. Junior Jenna Mosketti and senior Tatum Coffey chip in 14 points apiece. Mosketti has won 25 percent of her team's draw controls. Sophomore Abby Smucker leads in both ground balls, 11, and caused turnovers, 10. Junior Emi Smith has started in goal for all seven games and has an 8.46 GAA and a .505 save percentage.
