PRINCETON, N.J. (3/24/15) - Up two spots in the national poll, the No. 11-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team will host the University of California in the first meeting between the two programs on Wednesday night.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
No. 11-ranked Princeton defeated Harvard 17-12 on Saturday to improve to 2-0 in the Ivy League and 6-1 on the season. Sophomore Olivia Hompe leads the team in scoring with 19 goals and seven assists for 26 points. The Inside Lacrosse national player of the week, Erin Slifer isn't far behind with 16 tallies and seven assists for 23 points. She is also the team leader in ground balls with 12 and caused turnovers with six. Junior Stephanie Paloscio adds 11 goals and eight assists, while senior Erin McMunn has nine goals and eight helpers. McMunn has a team-high 17 draw controls and six caused turnovers. Junior Anya Gersoff, who has seven goals and two assists, has 12 draws and seven ground balls. Sophomore Anna Doherty is second on the team in draws with 14, and she also chips in four points. Freshman Camille Sullivan comes off the bench for four points as well and is second on the team in ground balls with 10. Sophomore Ellie DeGarmo is 6-1 in goal and has a .500 save percentage and a 9.21 goals against average.
THE SERIES
This is the first meeting between Princeton and California. Cal officially added women's lacrosse as a varsity sport on April 21, 1998 and made its varsity debut in 1999.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
Cal is spending a week on the East Coast, in order to play four games. The team's lost 16-2 at Towson Saturday, and defeated George Washington 15-11 on Monday. Following Wednesday's game they will travel to Cornell for its final game on Sunday before heading back home. Cal is 2-6 on the season, with its other win being an 18-10 victory over St. Mary's (Calif.). The team averages 11 goals per game while allowing 15.12 gpg.
Sophomore Bella Huther sits atop the scoring column with 25 points with 20 goals and five assists. Senior Gaby Christman has tallied 16 goals and adds four assists for 20 points, while senior Sasha Anielski has 13 goals and four assists. Junior Lizz Lavie has a team-high 12 assists and six goals for 18 points. Christman is both the team leader in caused turnovers (13) and ground balls (12), while ranking second in draws (12). Only freshman Chloe Landry has more draws, winning 18. The Bears split goaltending between junior Helen Hansen and sophomore Kate Gutierrez. Gutierrez has more playing time and has started in six games, putting up a 1-4 record with a .256 save percentage and a 17.43 GAA. Hansen, got the start Monday at GW and is 1-2 in goal with a .269 save percentage and a 14.21 GAA.
