Princeton Squash Mourns The Passing Of Former Men's Coach Bill Summers
March 26, 2015 | Men's Squash, Women's Squash
The Princeton men's and women's squash teams mourn the loss of Bill Summers, who guided the Princeton men's squash team to both an Ivy League and national team championship in 1974 as head coach, after he passed away earlier this month.
Summers took over the men's team in 1969 following the retirement of John Conroy, who served as head coach for 29 years, and posted a 36-17 record during his five seasons at Princeton. His team ended a 17-year Ivy League championship drought, as well as a 19-year ISA team championship drought, during a historic 1973-74 season.
The highlight of that season was a 5-4 victory over the Crimson, which was Princeton's first win over Harvard during the regular season since 1966. He called it a "sensational team effort under the circumstances" in the Feb. 11, 1974 edition of The Daily Princetonian.
Summers also served as head squash/tennis coach at Pittsburgh, as well as head squash coach at Tufts. You can read his obituary here.
His legacy is a permanent one in college squash; the 'C' Flight of the CSA national team championships is named "The Summers Cup."
