Delaware Upsets No. 11 Princeton, 12-10

PRINCETON, N.J. (3/28/15) - A back-and-forth affair went in favor of the University of Delaware as the Blue Hens pulled off a 12-10 upset of the No. 11 ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team.
It was a battle from start to finish, with eight lead changes and seven ties. With a slim one-goal lead, Princeton (7-2) wasn't careful enough with the ball and Delaware (8-4) capitalized, scoring the last three goals to take the win.
“Our last six possessions we weren't able to come up with goals and that's a problem,” Princeton head coach Chris Sailer said. “We had turnovers, we had shots that the goalie saved, and meanwhile they had three at the other end and it's hard to pull pout a close game that way.”
Sophomore Anna Doherty put the Tigers on the board first, but a pair of Delaware goals gave the Blue Hens the lead eight minutes into the game. Stephanie Paloscio tied it two minutes later on a free-position attempt. The game's leading scorer Shannon Hawley and Jamie Schwartz each scored as the Blue Hens took a two-goal lead at 12:11.
Princeton called a timeout to regroup and came out from the break more settled. The Tigers rattled off four straight goals in a span of 7:22 to take its first lead since the first goal, 6-4. Paloscio scored her second, while freshman Camille Sullivan notched a goal as did junior Anya Gersoff and sophomore Olivia Hompe.
Casey Lyons added her second of the day with nine seconds remaining in the first half to make it a one-goal game at halftime.
Doherty opened the second with a goal with help from Paloscio, 7-5.
The Blue Hens got a pair from Hawley knot the game at 7-7, and Cailtin McCartney scored the go-ahead goal at 21:03. The possession was helped along with Delaware getting to free draw controls in the second after Princeton fouls after the seventh and eighth goals.
Hompe and Gersoff scored within a minute of each other to put the Tigers back on top 9-8 at 18:51. Senior Erin Slifer assisted on Hompe's goal, while Hompe helped Gersoff.
Hawley's fourth goal, a man-up goal, tied the game at 16:36, coming after Amanda Leavell was assessed the only yellow card of the afternoon.
Slifer added her third assist of the afternoon on Doherty's third goal at 12:28, that gave the Tigers the one-goal edge, 10-9.
The offense went quite across the next eight minutes, with Princeton holding the 10-9 lead.
Madeline Rodriguez had a great pick off on a Raffety pass, but the ensuing shot by Hompe was saved by Alex Zaugra. Down the other end sophomore Ellie DeGarmo made a stop and Maddy Lynch cleared before Princeton called another timeout with seven minutes to play. Two minutes later Sullivan elected to pass on an eight meter but the pass was picked off and Delaware took the ball the other way and the possession led to a goal. Rafferty shot high to tie the game, 10-10, at 4:51.
Gersoff won the next draw control but Hawley forced a turnover on Rodriquez. It was all for naught however as Doherty forced a turnover, collected the ground ball and gave Princeton a chance to call a timeout and draw something up with 3:41 remaining in the tie game.
Thirty seconds after the restart, another turnover, this time by Slifer on a pass behind the net, gave Delaware the ball. After the clear and with 44.7 seconds left Delaware called a timeout. It was Hawley's fifth goal of the game with 33 seconds left that made the difference.
Too much time came off the clock on the next draw control before Liz Bannantine eventual came up with the ball but lost it seconds later. Lizzie Duffey quickly dished off a pass to Rafferty for the final goal.
“I think we really took Delaware seriously but we didn't put our best out on the field today,” Doherty said. “Delaware really stepped up to the plate. You've got to give it to them, they made hard plays and we didn't.”
Doherty led Princeton with three goals, four caused turnovers, three ground balls and one draw. Hompe scored twice and added one assist, three draws and one ground ball, while Paloscio added two goals and one assist as well. Gersoff scored twice and won two draws. DeGarmo made six saves, three on eight-meter shots.
Adding to Hawley's five-goal effort was Rafferty with three goals. McCartney had one goal and one assist, won a game-high six draws, while adding two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Schwartz had a goal and an assist as well. Zaugra made seven saves to get the win.
Delaware outshot Princeton 21-18, and won one more draw, 12-11. Ground balls fell 11-10 in favor of Princeton, while both teams committed 11 turnovers apiece.
The Tigers, 2-0 in the Ivy League, resume the conference schedule on Saturday, April 4 at Yale.
