Brown Tops Princeton As Goalies Outshine Offenses
March 29, 2015 | Men's Lacrosse
Final Stats
A game that figured to have 96 or so shots did have 96 shots.
A game that figured to have 30 goals instead had 30 saves.
Brown's Jack Kelly and Princeton's Eric Sanschagrin were awesome all game, combining to hold two of the nation's top offenses nearly 12 goals below their season averages. In the end, the teams instead produced 18 goals, and 10 of which went to Brown, who defeated Princeton 10-8 in a matchup of Ivy League unbeatens.
Kelly and Sanschagrin each made 15 saves, many of them wildly spectacular, and it was those two performances that kept the score from reflecting the track meet the game actually was. Princeton took a season-high 51 shots and allowed a season-high 45 as the teams went up-and-down the field, only to be stoned time and again by the goalies.
The win improved Brown to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League, as the Bears joined Cornell (3-0) as the only teams without a league loss. Princeton is now 6-2, 2-1 in the league headed into non-league road games at Stony Brook (Saturday) and Lehigh (April 7).
NOTES -
* Sanschagrin's 15 saves were one off his career-high, set earlier this year against Hofstra
* Princeton's defense, as well as Sanschagrin, held Brown's Dylan Molloy, the nation's leader in goals per game, to just two assists and 0 for 12 shooting. Brian Pickup spent much of the game on Molloy
* Molloy entered the game leading Division I in goals per game. Princeton's Kip Orban entered leading Division I midfielders in goals per game. The two combined for non goals on 0 for 22 shooting. Princeton is now 6-0 when Orban scores and 0-2 when he doesn't.
* Princeton trailed 5-3 early in the third quarter before tying it on goals from Gavin McBride and Adam Hardej. From that point, Princeton did not score for 20 minutes as Brown built the lead to 10-5. The Tigers scored the final three in the game and had four more shots after Zach Currier's behind-the-back goal with 3:54 left made it 10-8. Princeton never led in the game.
* Mike MacDonald had three goals and an assist and moved past Wick Sollers into eighth place all time at Princeton with 175 career points (109G, 66A). MacDonald, who leads the team in goals (25) and assists (20), needs five goals to tie Sollers for sixth place in goals.
* Ryan Ambler had three assists, giving him 99 career points (48G, 51A).
* McBride's goal keeps him as the only player with at least one point in every game this season.
* Will Himler had his first goal of the year.
* Austin deButts, who leads the team in caused turnovers, had two more, giving him 12.
* Brown got three goals from longsticks, including two goals (and an assist) from LSM Larken Kemp.
