HANOVER, N.H. (3/7/15) - Princeton battled until the very end and put up a tremendous fight at Thompson Arena this weekend, but it wasn't in the cards for the Tigers.
Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in the second period and Princeton had the opportunities, but an empty-net goal with 5.1 seconds left sealed the 2-0 win for the Big Green and the end of the season for the Tigers.
“The foundation is set for where we want to get to,” head coach Ron Fogarty commented after the game. “The seniors, through their work ethic and commitment, have paved the way now for the next seven years. The current freshmen will know what it takes and will keep passing that on to the next classes.”
In Fogarty style when asked about his first year at Princeton and the adjustment from Division III to Division I, he responded, “6x4 nets, same rules.” Then followed up with, “It was enjoyable. It was a great group of guys to work with. I enjoyed coaching them Monday through Thursday and it was a pleasure to stand behind the bench and be a part of this program.”
The score wasn't reflective of the show that was put on for the fans in attendance tonight.
Brad Schierhorn broke the stalemate at 16:59 of the second period on an odd-man rush with teammate Eric Robinson delivering the puck to Schierhorn at the top of the right circle for the one-timer.
The Tigers continued to battle and had some quality scoring chances but couldn't capitalize. When Brett Patterson was called for tripping at 16:39 of the third, it gave the Tigers a great opportunity to square up the game. Junior Jonathan Liau had a few whacks at the puck before James Kruger covered up for a face off. Dartmouth cleared two more times before senior Aaron Ave had a shot get blocked. The Big Green had a short-handed shot sail wide and escaped the two minutes without harm.
With 1:11 to play Colton Phinney skated to the net with the season on the brink. Eric Neiley got the puck in the neutral zone and flung it towards the goal but the shot was blocked by freshman defender Joe Grabowski - the second time in the game he sacrificed his body with a big-time block.
The Tigers had a rained down a flurry of shots on the other end until an unfortunate shot rang along the boards and to the skate of Rick Pinkston. He pushed it out to Brandon McNally and Robinson started up the ice, taking the feed and putting it into the empty net with 5.1 seconds left.
Phinney made 30 saves in net, while Kruger stopped 17 as Dartmouth outshot Princeton 32-17.
Princeton 0 for 2 on the power play, while Dartmouth was 0 for 1.
Princeton finishes the 2014-15 season with a 4-23-2 overall record. Dartmouth (17-10-4) moves on the quarterfinals facing Colgate in a three-game series next weekend in Hamilton, N.Y.
