Men's Tennis Takes First Ivy Loss, Falls to Dartmouth 5-2
April 11, 2015 | Men's Tennis
The pursuit of a record-tying 20th win will have to wait at least another weekend, as Dartmouth came to the Lenz Tennis Center Saturday afternoon and dealt Princeton its first Ivy League loss of the season, 5-2.
Princeton, ranked 30th in the nation by the ITA, now stands at 18-5 overall and 3-1 in the Ivy. Dartmouth, ranked No. 54 in the nation, earned its first Ivy win to stand at 10-10 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Things began well for Princeton with the Tigers taking the doubles point on a tiebreak victory by Tom Colautti and Zack McCourt on court one, but Dartmouth quickly turned things around, winning the first set on each of the top five courts. The Big Green went on to close out four of those five first-set wins in straight sets and finished off a win by national No. 53 Dovydas Sakinis on court one to make the 5-2 final along with Dan Richardson's win at sixth.
Entering the weekend, Princeton had hopes of sweeping to equal the 1995 team at a program-record 20 wins, but that pursuit will go on at least another weekend. Harvard, ranked 35th in the nation, will visit the Lenz Tennis Center Sunday looking to win the season series after the teams split their matches in two other tournaments, a Harvard win in the ECAC Championship in February and a Princeton win in a University of San Diego-hosted tournament just last month.

Coach Billy Pate on the match: "We haven't had many letdowns this year, but today wasn't our best performance. Dartmouth was the better team today and deserved to win. The doubles point was a bit inconsistent from both sides, and though we were able to get the 1-0 lead, we did a poor job of getting any kind of momentum in singles. Losing five of six first sets in singles is a tough obstacle to rebound from and that's where we found ourselves. The most important thing is to put this behind us and be ready to bounce back tomorrow against Harvard. I expect a much better level and sense of urgency from everyone." |
