McMunn Becomes All-Time Assist Leader in 13-11 Win at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. (4/11/15) - The last time Princeton played Cornell, Erin McMunn set an Ivy League Tournament record with seven goals. Today in Princeton's 13-11 win in Ithaca, McMunn assisted on her 82nd goal to become Princeton's all-time assists leader.
Princeton used a five-goal run in the second half to overcome a three-goal deficit to take the lead over Cornell, 10-8. It was that 10th goal of the game that McMunn became the Tigers' all-time leader, setting up teammate Stephanie Paloscio. The former record of 81 was held for 15 years by three-time All-America Crista Samaras '99.
It took Princeton 6-0 seconds to get on the board, as sophomore Anna Doherty scored the first goal of the game. From there the first half saw four lead changes and four ties, as neither team took a significant lead in the see-saw match.
Cornell added two goals, with a free-position goal by Lindsay Toppe and a Catherine Ellis unassisted goal.
Princeton regained the lead, 3-2, after Olivia Hompe put away a Stephanie Paloscio feed and freshman Abby Finkelston recorded her first career assist on McMunn's goal at 20:19.
Ellis added her second goal of the afternoon to knot the game at 3-3 before Erin Slifer scored twice within 41 seconds to make it 5-3 Tigers.
The Big Red ended the first half on a three-goal run, with Sarah Heffner, Kristy Gilbert and Toppe scoring to give Cornell a 6-5 lead at the intermission.
The run continued into the second half, extending to five straight, as Toppe scored 11 seconds off the opening draw and Joey Coffey added another at 25:27 as Cornell took the largest lead of the game, 8-5.
Two minutes later, the tide turned.
Paloscio sparked a five-goal Princeton run, in a span of 4:57 that saw the Tigers take a 10-8 lead.
Finkelston scored her first collegiate goal with Hompe assisting, Anya Gersoff and Slifer added unassisted goals and rounding out the run was the Paloscio from McMunn goal that would be McMunn's 82nd career assist.
Toppe ended the Big Red drought at 13:16 but Princeton wasn't done yet.
Doherty scored her second goal of the game and Slifer converted an eight-meter man-up goal as the Tigers lead 12-9 with 6:13 remaining.
Slifer led the Tigers with a five-point day with four goals. Paloscio had two goals and one assist and Doherty had a hat trick. Finkelston, McMunn and Hompe each had two-points.
Toppe scored her fifth goal of the day at 5:33 on an eight-meter attempt to cut her team's deficit to just two.
Annie Woehling, who came in on relief of Ellie DeGarmo, made her biggest stop of the day with less than four minutes after a Princeton turnover resulted in Toppe barreling down the field looking to score.
Princeton failed to outlet the ball as Cornell applied pressure to get the ball back, however the Big Red were careless with an errant pass to give Princeton possession with two minutes left.
The Tigers took their time on the offensive end before Doherty scored her third goal of the game with Slifer assisting with 47.5 seconds remaining.
It was Tripodi that had the final goal however, as Hanson passed off the eight-meter attempt – a tough angle and found Tripodi on the weak side for the lay-up.
Cornell had a slight edge in shots, 26-22. The teams were even in draws with 13 apiece and ground balls with 18 each.
Slifer led the Tigers with a five-point game with four goals. Paloscio had two goals and one assist, while Doherty recorded a hat trick. Finkelston, McMunn and Hompe had two points apiece. DeGarmo made five saves on 11 shots, and Woehing had three saves on eight shots.
Toppe finished the game with a game-high five goals, while Tripodi had a goal and an assist and Ellis had two tallies. Renee Poullott finished with eight saves.
Princeton takes on Ivy League rival Penn on Wednesday night at Franklin Field. It will be a battle of the unbeatens, as Penn defeated Harvard 8-6 this afternoon to improve to 4-0 in the conference.
