Columbia Stops Perfect Ivy Bid for Women's Tennis, Shifting Focus to Sunday
April 17, 2015 | Women's Tennis
Back-to-back perfect Ivy League seasons hasn't been accomplished in women's tennis since 2005 and 2006, and Princeton's bid at the challenging feat came to a close Friday afternoon in Manhattan.
Columbia, the No. 46-ranked team in the nation, clung to its hope of sharing the Ivy League title with a 4-3 win over Princeton, snapping the Tigers' 12-match Ivy winning streak. The Lions were also the last team to beat Princeton in Ivy play, closing the 2013 league season with a win to wrap up their own Ivy title.
But, if the Tigers can prevail Sunday on their home courts against No. 75 Cornell, the only things lost will be the perfect Ivy season and the Ivy winning streak, as an outright Ivy title and the automatic NCAA berth would be Princeton's with a win over the Big Red.
Columbia opened the day by outlasting Princeton in a tiebreak on court one to claim the doubles point, and the match came down to the next-to-last contest on court, with Columbia's Crystal Leung getting past Alanna Wolff on court three to claim a fourth team point.
Amanda Muliawan, Dorothy Tang and Katie Goepel had singles wins for Princeton, Goepel's pulling the Tigers within 3-2 before court three tipped Columbia's way in a straight-set match with both frames ending in 9-7 tiebreakers.
Sunday's match at the Lenz Tennis Center is scheduled for a noon start.
