Men's Tennis Wins at Cornell, Awaits Postseason Fate
April 19, 2015 | Men's Tennis
Will Princeton's name be called to join the NCAA men's tennis team tournament for the first time since 1998?
The Tigers will have to wait until April 28 to find out the answer to that question, but the team helped its resume with its 10th win over a ranked opponent on the season, the latest coming Sunday at No. 48 Cornell.
Columbia wrapped up a 7-0 Ivy League season Sunday with a win over Penn, claiming the outright league title and an NCAA automatic berth. New ITA rankings will be out Tuesday, but the list heading into this weekend had Princeton at No. 35, 12 spots higher than where Princeton was in 2013 when it just missed getting an at-large berth to the 2013 NCAAs.
Princeton lost the doubles point but came back with wins at the top from Zack McCourt and Tom Colautti to take the lead. Princeton led again after Kial Kaiser answered a Cornell win at third, putting the Tigers up 3-1 for senior Dan Richardson to win his match on court four in three sets and claim a fourth point for Princeton.
Princeton's 19 wins on the season are the second-most in program history behind only the 20 wins the team had in 1995.
The NCAA selection show will be streamed on NCAA.com on April 28 at 5:30 p.m.

Coach Billy Pate on the match: "I'm exceptionally proud of our team. This was an important match today for us and we needed it. Cornell is a very strong team and had really hit their stride lately. They had a spirited crowd out for their senior day, but our guys displayed tremendous poise by winning four tough matches. It was gratifying to see us do it on the road with a combination of youth (freshman Kial Kaiser) and experience (senior Dan Richardson). We've been preaching our depth and we saw that really contribute to this win today. I feel like this should put us in a better position for an at-large NCAA berth. This team deserves that opportunity as they have put together a great resume to continue the season. We'll look forward to the selection show on April 28. |
