PRINCETON, N.J. (4/15/15) - The Princeton women's lacrosse team is your 2015 Ivy League Champions! The Tigers defeated Brown this afternoon 14-8 to finish with a undefeated league record of 7-0.
This is the program's 11th Ivy League title and the fifth time winning it with an unblemished record.
"I'm so happy for our team, our staff, and especially for our seniors who have given so much to this program, that we were able to pull off a big win against Brown today to capture our second consecutive Ivy League Championship," Princeton head coach Chris Sailer said. "Ivy League lacrosse is incredibly competitive, with longstanding rivalries and tradition, so to go 7-0 over the course of the Ivy season is a huge accomplishment, and one we've had our sights clearly set on for the past 11 months. This 2015 Tiger team is a special group, and they've worked hard to put themselves in position for a great season. I'm so proud of their work ethic, their preparation and their teamwork, and I'm looking forward to getting back to work with them on Monday to prepare for the upcoming Ivy Tournament."
No. 10 Princeton (12-3, 7-0) will host the Ivy League Tournament next weekend, May 1 & 3 on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. Penn and Cornell will face off at 4 p.m., followed by the Princeton vs. Harvard semifinal at 7 p.m. The winners will meet for the Ivy League tournament title on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Leading the Tigers to victory was senior Erin McMunn, who had a six-point game with five goals. Erin Slifer collected a hat trick and sophomore Olivia Hompe had two goals and three assists. Her third assist marked her 100th career point as a Tiger - and she did it in just 34 games. Hompe is the 32nd player in program history to join the Century Club, joining current teammates McMunn and Slifer in the group. Junior Stephanie Paloscio and sophomore Anna Doherty had a goal and an assist each. Sophomore Ellie DeGarmo earned the win making five saves in goal. Senior Annie Woehling played out the final 4:35 and make two saves on three shots.
"It has been more than any of the seniors could ask for to go 7-0 in the Ivies, and to win it like that on Senior Day was just so incredible," McMunn said. "Winning the title outright and hosting the tournament has been a goal for this team since the beginning of the year, and I think we're all just really proud of what we've been able to do so far. This team has a lot of love for one another, and I think that's going to carry us far this year. We know that we're not done yet, and we're gelling at the right time, and we're really excited to get back on the field Friday against Harvard."
All six seniors saw playing time on Senior Day. Prior to the game Erin Curley, Erika Grabbi, Jess Nelson, McMunn, Slifer and Woehling were each honored.
The Tigers grabbed a 6-1 lead to start the game that saw a hat trick by McMunn, and goals from Doherty, Slifer and Grabbi.
Brown closed out the final 5 minutes of the half on a 2-1 run, to sit four goals back, 7-3 at intermission.
The Bears crept within three in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but it would be as close as they would get as the Tigers rattled off four straight to take a 12-5 lead at 12:47.
The teams traded goals to finish out the game, the final goal coming on an odd bounce off the post by Janie Gion at 2:30.
Gion finished the game with a hat trick and one assist, while Abby Bunting had two goals and two assists. Kellie Roddy made 12 saves in Brown's final game of the season, as the Bears finish up 9-7 overall and 1-6 in the league.
