Princeton Hockey: Alumni Update
April 03, 2015 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton hockey led the way with three alums being named their clubs IOA/American Specialty Man of the Year. Thirteen of the 30 honorees played college hockey - with the Tigers claiming the most with three. Impressively Kyle Hagel '08 earns his fifth AHL Man of the Year award, in five years, with five different organizations. Mike Sdao '13 earns his first honor, while Mike Moore '08 is taking the honor for the fourth time. This is the second consecutive season that Princeton has had three Man of the Year honorees.
Kyle Hagel (Charlotte Checkers)
In addition to spending more hours at more of the Checkers' scheduled school and community appearances than any of his teammates, Hagel also continued the successful “Stick to Reading” campaign he created and implemented in his previous AHL cities. On his own time, Hagel contacted the administration at McClintock Middle School in Charlotte, laid the groundwork for the program and encouraged teammates to join for scheduled appearances at the school.
Over the course of the season, Hagel, who paces the Checkers and ranks among the AHL leaders in penalty minutes and fighting majors, also remained involved in two endeavors he helped create earlier in his career: Shnarped, an app that directly connects hockey players with fans, and Hockey Players for Kids, a nonprofit organization made up of hockey players dedicated to improving the communities they live in.
This is Hagel's 5th consecutive season in which he has been his team's Man of the Year, as he has previously been honored with the Portland Pirates (13-14), Hamilton Bulldogs (12-13), Peoria Rivermen (11-12) and Rockford IceHogs (10-11). - from Charlotte press release
Mike Sadao (Binghamton Senators)
Sdao is always willing to help out in the Binghamton community. He is a fan-favorite who is happy to interact with the B-Sens fans whether it is at a community event, a season ticket holder party, after a game or practice, or just in the general public.
As he enters into his third season with the Binghamton Senators, Sdao has participated in many community service events including B-Sens and Magic Paintbrush Project's Paint with the Players, YMCA Floor Hockey programs, helping with Toys for Tots, and many more. He recently took the initiative to bring Hockey Players 4 Kids' Stick to Reading program to the Broome County Area schools. With several other players accompanying him, Sdao visited local classrooms to read to local students and stress the importance of reading education. - from Binghamton press release
Mike Moore (Hershey Bears)
In his first year with Hersey, Moore earns the honor. This is his fourth time winning the award - taking it twice with Worcester in 2008-09, 2009-10 and last year with Providence Bruins.
The trio are now finalists for the AHL's 2014-15 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The award is named after the late AHL All-Star Yanick Dupré, who died in 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia.
Retired NHL'er and Stanley Cup champion George Parros '03 is making appearances on Hockey Wives, a Canadian reality show featuring his wife Tiffany. The show is currently airing on the W Network across Canada.
Jack Berger '14 was named the Swedish Fans/Glasrikets Pride Player of the Year The Vikings alternate captain has 30 points in 34 games, scoring 13 goals and 17 assists. Watch him accept his award and talk about his team and experience here.

Skellefteå is currently playing in the SHL semifinals, one game away from reaching the finals. Calof ranks fourth in SHL playoff points with nine in eight games.
Stanley Cup champion Kevin Westgarth '07 enters the playoffs with his team, the Belfast Giants of the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL).
