PRINCETON, N.J. (5/13/15) - The quest continues for the Princeton women's lacrosse team as the Tigers travel to No. 3 seed Duke for the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Game time is 1 p.m., on Saturday, May 16 at Koskinen Stadium.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament after an 18-8 win over Fairfield in the first round and an 8-4 win over No. 6 seed and host Stony Brook in the second round. The Tigers earned the Ivy League's automatic bid by winning the Ivy League Tournament Championship after an undefeated league season. The team is currently riding an eight-game unbeaten streak and is 16-3 overall and ranked No. 11 in the latest national poll.
Senior Erin Slifer has a one-point lead on sophomore Olivia Hompe in the scoring column. Slifer has 41 tallies and a team-best 29 assists for 70 points, while Hompe has a team-high 53 goals and 16 assists for 69 points. Senior Erin McMunn contributes 29 goals and 18 assists for 47 points, while junior Stephanie Paloscio adds 41 points on 21 goals and 20 helpers. Junior Anya Gersoff and sophomore Anna Doherty are next on the list with 27 and 26 points, respectively. Freshmen Camille Sullivan and Abby Finkelston are also in double digits in scoring. Gersoff and Doherty are the team leaders in draw controls with 38 and 33 respectively, while Hompe and Slifer have the most ground balls with 27 and 23. Doherty has caused the most turnovers with 18, while sophomore Amanda Leavell has 14. In goal, sophomore Ellie DeGarmo is 14-3 with a .463 save percentage and an 8.81 goals against average. Senior Annie Woehling is 2-0 in the 142 minutes she has played between the pipes.
THE SERIES
Princeton and Duke are tied in the series, eight games apiece. The Blue Devils won the last meeting, a 10-9 double overtime game in the 2013 NCAA second round in Annapolis. Inside Lacrosse later made that one of the top 5 games of the year in its annual end-of-year voting. Duke has won the last five meetings in the series, with Princeton's last win coming in 2008, a 13-8 game in Princeton.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
Duke earned the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and has 15-4 overall record. The team is ranked No. 5 in the latest poll and has reached as high as No. 3 this season. Duke is 7-4 against ranked opponents, while falling to No. 18 Johns Hopkins 9-8 the last time it faced a ranked squad. Earning a bye for the first round, the Blue Devils defeated USC 17-9 in the second round.
Senior Kerrin Maurer leads the Blue Devils on offense with 41 goals and 29 assists for 70 points. She has more draw controls than points however, pulling down 73 draws. Senior Brigid Smith adds 37 goals and 19 helpers for 56 points, while senior Katie Trees has 54 points on 33 goals and 21 assists and adds 36 draws . Senior Taylor Trimble and freshman Kyra Harney chip in 45 points apiece. Senior defender Gabby Moise (18), Trees (15) and junior goalie Kelsey Duryea (15) are the top three on the team in caused turnovers, while Duryea (41), junior defender Claire Scarrone (28) have the most ground balls. Duryea has played in all but 35 minutes in goal and is 15-4 with the ninth-best save percentage in the country at .480 save percentage and a 7.66 GAA, as Duke sports the 11th best scoring defense in the NCAA.
