PRINCETON, N.J. (5/2/15) - A long-time Ivy League rivalry will be center stage on Sunday, May 3 when Princeton hosts Penn in the Ivy League Tournament Championship at 11 a.m., on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. The winner receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and can rest a bit easier on Sunday night when the selections are made.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton reaches the Ivy League championship game for the second consecutive season thanks to a 15-8 win over Harvard in the semifinals on Friday night. Princeton's offense exploded in the second half using a 9-0 run to erase a 4-4 halftime tie. The Tigers' 15 goals is an Ivy League tournament record for goals in a game as six different players scored with 10 goals being assisted tallies. Sophomore Olivia Hompe scored a career-high six goals and came within one goal of breaking teammate Erin McMunn's seven-goal Ivy League tournament record from one year ago. Hompe scored on all six of her shots on goal. Another personal best came from sophomore goalie Ellie DeGarmo, who made a career high 12 saves. Sophomores Anna Doherty and Lauren Steidl had five draw controls apiece - both career highs. Senior Erin Slifer had a five-point game with two goals and a game-high three helpers. Junior Anya Gersoff tallied three goals and had one assist, while McMunn scored twice and had two assists.
The Tigers are 13-3 overall and finished the Ivy League with a perfect 7-0 record to earn the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Princeton is ranked No. 11 in both national polls this week. Hompe leads the team in scoring with 45 goals and 15 assists for 60 points. Slifer is one point back with 59 points on 37 goals and a team-high 22 assists. McMunn adds 39 points, junior Stephanie Paloscio has 37. Doherty and Gersoff have both reach the 20+ point plateau as well. Doherty is the team leader in caused turnover with 15, while Slifer has 12. Slifer has the most ground balls on the team with 22, while Hompe has 21. Princeton uses a number of players to take and win the draw controls, with four players having more than 20 wins each, led by Gersoff's 31. DeGarmo is 11-3 in goal and has a 9.02 goals against average and a .463 save percentage. Backup goalie senior Annie Woehling is 2-0 with a .351 save percentage.
THE SERIES
Princeton holds a two-game lead over Penn in the all-time series, 22-20-3. The Tigers won the regular-season meeting, 9-7 at Franklin Field. Last year the team's split with Princeton winning the regular season game, 9-5, before Penn won this very game, the Ivy championship game, 9-6. Senior Erin McMunn leads all Tigers against Penn with 16 points, including 12 goals, in five games. Senior Erin Slifer has 12 points in five games and a team-best 11 draw controls. Sophomore Ellie DeGarmo is 1-0 against Penn with a .636 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE QUAKERS
Penn earned its way to the Ivy League championship game with a 7-6 win over Cornell on Friday night. It was the Quakers second consecutive meeting with the Big Red, with both games being one-goal wins. On Friday night Penn had a 5-4 lead at the start of the second half, before the Ivy League Defender of the Year, senior Meg Markham was ejected with her second yellow card. The Quakers responded scoring two straight and held off a Cornell rally, as the Big Red got within one with less than four minutes to play. Senior Lucy Ferguson stopped what would be the game-tying goal with 11 seconds left, one of her nine stops of the game.
Penn matches Princeton with a 13-3 overall record and finished second in the league with a 6-1 mark. The Ivy League Attacker of the Year senior Tory Bensen leads the team in scoring with 51 points on 47 goals and four assists. Junior Nina Corcoran sits three points back with a team-best 29 assists and 19 goals. Junior Iris Williamson adds 33 points, while junior Lely DeSimone chips in 27 and junior Catherine Dickinson contributes 23. The Ivy League Defender of the Year, senior Meg Markham leads the team in draw controls with 43, caused turnovers with 42 and ground balls with 26. Senior Lucy Ferguson has a .511 save percentage and a 6.83 GAA playing all but five minutes in net this season.
