Princeton & Fairfield Meet for First Time at NCAA Tournament

PRINCETON, N.J. (5/5/15) - The Princeton women's lacrosse team will face Fairfield for the first time as the two face off on Friday, May 3 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Game time is at 7 p.m., at LaValle Stadium on the Stony Brook University campus.
EYE ON THE TIGERSPrinceton reaches the NCAA Tournament by winning the Ivy League Tournament Championship and the league's automatic bid. The Tigers earned the No. 1 seed in the Ivy tournament thanks to an unbeaten 7-0 Ivy record, and the wins kept coming as Princeton defeated Harvard 15-8 in the semifinals and No. 13 Penn 14-11 in the title tilt. At 14-3, the Tigers are ranked No. 11 and No. 12 in the latest national polls.
Sophomore Olivia Hompe and senior Erin Slifer both have 63 points to lead the offense. Hompe has a team-best 48 goals and 15 assists, while Slifer has 40 goals and a team-high 23 assists. Senior Erin McMunn adds 25 goals and 17 assists, while junior Stephanie Paloscio contributes 19 goals and 19 assists. Sophomore Anna Doherty chips in 21 goals and three helpers while junior Anya Gersoff adds 18 goals and four assists. Defensively, Doherty leads the team with 16 caused turnovers, while Slifer and sophomore Amanda Leavell has 12 each. Hompe has a team-best 24 ground balls, while Slifer and Gersoff following with 22 apiece. Gersoff and Doherty have the most draw controls on the team with 34 and 30, respectively. Sophomore Ellie DeGarmo is 12-3 in goal and has a 9.16 goals against average and a .460 save percentage. Backup senior Annie Woehling is 2-0 with a .351 save percentage.
THE SERIES
This will be the first meeting between Princeton and Fairfield.
SCOUTING THE STAGS
The Stags earned their way into the tournament with the automatic bid from the MAAC and a 14-4 overall record. This is just the second NCAA appearance for Fairfield. The Stags are unbeaten at 8-0 when playing away from Fairfield. Princeton will be Fairfield's first ranked opponent of the season as its strength of schedule ranks 80th in the NCAA. Fairfield has the fourth best scoring defense in the NCAA (6.83) and ranks second in save percentage (.538)
Sophomore Alex Fehmel and junior Julieanne Mascera are the team's leading goal scores. Fehmel has 30 tallies and 13 assists for 43 total points, while Mascera has 29 goals and eight assists for 37 points. Junior Maeve Quinn has the most assists on the team with 15, and adds to that 17 goals for 32 points. Sophomore Riley Hellstein contributes 26 points, while junior Jenna Fuchs has 24 off the bench and junior defender Colleen Reynolds chips in 22. Senior Courtney Chmil, senior Jamie Leone and sophomore Scarlette Sulliman are also in double digits in points. Senior middie Meghan Reda has a team-best 43 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers. Fehmel has the second most caused turnovers with 20. Hellstein, Reynolds and Chmil are the team's go-tos on the draw, with 39, 32 and 21, respectively. Junior Chelsey Sidaras has started in net in all but one game and is 13-4. She has a 6.64 GAA and a .535 save percentage.
