PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Princeton University sprint football team opened its 2015 season with a 48-13 loss to Chestnut Hill at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School.
Playing its inaugural sprint football game, Chestnut Hill improved to 1-0 on the young season. Princeton returns to action on Friday, Sept. 25 when it opens its home slate against the United States Military Academy.
Taking advantage of a botched punt early in the first quarter, Chestnut Hill took over deep in Princeton territory and needed just five plays and 2:46 to cover 22 yards. Reginald Robinson Jr. capped off the Griffins' first-ever drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Josean Perez.
Setting up another Chestnut Hill score, Kadeem Pankey intercepted a Chad Cowden pass with less than five minutes to go in the first quarter before returning it 36 yards to the Princeton 33-yardline. Gaining 21 yards on first down, Theophilus McBurnette picked up 12 more on the next snap and hit pay-dirt to make it 14-0 with 2:34 left in the opening period.
Looking to get going, Princeton took over on its own 35-yardline. Scrambling for six yards on first down, Cowden hit Tyler Kaye for a 12-yard gain to move the chains. After a Chestnut Hill penalty moved the ball to the Griffins' 32-yardline, Cowden once again hit Kaye, this time for a 32-yard strike to cut the deficit to 14-7.
Coming right back, Chestnut Hill pieced together an eight-play 75-yard drive in 3:17. Completing two of his three pass attempts, Robinson wrapped up the scoring drive with an 11-yard TD to Domoree Hill that pushed the margin to 21-7 at the 12:35 mark of the second quarter.
Getting picked off for the second time, Cowden threw an errant pass that ended up in the hands of Chestnut Hill's Marquis Watson at the Griffins' 34-yardline. Making amends, Princeton forced a Watson fumble on the return before recovering the loose ball back in Chestnut Hill territory.
Hoping to cut into the Griffin margin, the Tigers marched the ball inside the 5-yardline. After a pair of Harvey Butler runs, Cowden was sacked for a 7-yard loss. Facing fourth down, Princeton elected to go for the touchdown, but a Cowden incompletion to Kaye turned the ball back over to Chestnut Hill.
With time winding down in the half, Robinson added to its cushion when Robinson hit Hill in stride for a 58-yard pass-and-catch that made it 28-7. With just seconds remaining in the final frame, Emanuel Castaneda ripped off a 26-yard return to give the Tigers the ball on their own 41-yardline. Cowden then linked up with Kaye for a 47-yard completion, but the Princeton drive fizzled with the Tigers once again coming up empty.
Continuing to build their lead early in the second half, the Griffins tacked on two more touchdowns in the first five minutes on a 41-yard Dasantae Callis scamper and an 8-yard McBurnette TD run. All told, Chestnut Hill rolled up 438 yards of total offense, with 246 yards coming on the ground.
Averaging 9.1 yards per carry, Callis picked up 127 yards on 14 touches with a touchdown. McBurnette gained 65 yards and scored a pair of TDs, while Robinson finished 11-of-18 through the air for 192 yards and three touchdowns.
Cowden completed 11 of his 23 pass attempts for 163 yards, a touchdown, and three interceptions. Kaye caught six passes for 110 yards and a score.
