• Princeton will be facing a new opponent in Hampton and a foe in Norfolk State that the Tigers have faced just once before, last season. Both are MEAC schools, and the Tigers are 5-0 all-time against the MEAC, defeating North Carolina A&T in a 1983 NCAA Tournament preliminary-round game at The Palestra, and going 3-0 against Florida A&M, winning at Illinois in 1992, at FAMU in 2012 and Princeton in 2013. The Norfolk State win last season was the Tigers' most recent game against a MEAC opponent.
• The Tigers will have played in the three largest arenas in the MEAC after this trip, including the New Year's Day 2012 visit to Florida A&M (9,639). Hampton's Convocation Center seats 7,200, and NSU's Echols Hall seats 7,000.
• Though Princeton and Hampton have never met, the Tigers hosted Norfolk State last year in a 71-61 Tiger win. Norfolk State outshot Princeton from the field 48 percent to 38.9 percent and outrebounded the Tigers 40-34, but the Tigers helped make up the deficit at the 3-point line, going 9 of 25 to NSU's 2 of 11, and at the free-throw line, going 20 of 29 to NSU's 11 of 24.
• Princeton returns 50 of its 71 points from last year's Norfolk State game, losing 13 with Clay Wilson finishing up his college career and eight - as well as 12 rebounds - to Hans Brase's injury. Spencer Weisz led Princeton with 19 points, and Henry Caruso chipped in 14 off the bench. Norfolk State returns 37 of its 61, led by 25 points from Jeff Short. Norfolk State loses RaShid Gaston and Malik Thomas, who each added 10 points and Gaston added 12 boards. Gaston, an Ohio native, transferred to Xavier after last season and Thomas wrapped his college career in 2015.
• Princeton has won seven straight first games of the calendar year. Under Mitch Henderson, the Tigers have a 34-29 (.540) record in the pre-New Year portion of the schedule and a 47-21 (.691) record from Jan. 1 forward.
• A few days more than 107 years ago, Princeton had a three-game swing through Richmond and the Hampton Roads area, facing teams from three YMCAs, in Richmond, Hampton and Newport News. The Tigers swept that trip, Dec. 29-31, 1908, with a 23-21 win over the Richmond team, 64-7 over Hampton and 39-27 over Newport News. That, and a 1977 win at William & Mary, are the only times the Tigers have played in the Hampton Roads area.
• Both Princeton and Hampton have had iconic NCAA Tournament moments in the past two decades, Princeton with its upset of UCLA in 1996 and Mitch Henderson's celebratory leap, and Hampton in 2001 with its win as a 15th seed over Iowa State, punctuated by Hampton player David Johnson hoisting coach Steve Merfeld, who is now an assistant to head coach Greg McDermott at Creighton.
• Princeton's top Ivy League statistical ranking entering Saturday's games is first in defensive rebounding percentage (.809). Princeton is also second in scoring offense (75.5, Columbia 77.5), scoring margin (+5.9, Columbia +8.6), rebounding offense (38.2, Yale 42.0), rebounding margin (+4.6, Yale +11.5), steals (6.9, Cornell 7.8), turnover margin (+1.55, Dartmouth +2.00), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3, Columbia 1.4), defensive rebounds (27.6, Brown 28.4) and 3s made per game (9.1, Columbia 10.3).

• Princeton's 75.45 ppg average isn't far from the team record for a season-ending scoring average of 79.74, set in 1971-72.
• Under Mitch Henderson, Princeton has scored 90 points in a game five times. That's more than all other post-Pete Carril coaches combined and the fourth-most under a coach in program history. Princeton scored 90+ 21 times under Pete Carril, 18 times under Butch van Breda Kolff and 11 times under Cappy Cappon.
• Henry Caruso is on pace to score 489 points this season (28 games), which would be the most at Princeton since Ian Hummer scored 515 points in 32 games in 2011-12. He has also surpassed his total from all of last season, 176. He scored three points as a rookie. Caruso remains the team leader in rebounding at 6.9 rpg and has three double-doubles this season, the first three of his career.
• Princeton's top six scorers - Henry Caruso, Steven Cook, Devin Cannady, Spencer Weisz, Amir Bell and Pete Miller - have scored 683 of the team's 830 points this season, or 82.3 percent.
• Princeton has shot .400 or better from the field eight times in the 11 games this season and is 7-1 in those games (loss vs. Maryland). Princeton is 0-3 when not shooting at least .400.
• The number of 3-pointers Princeton makes hasn't been a predictor of wins so far this season. The Tigers are 3-2 when they make at least 10 3s and 4-2 when they make fewer than 10.
• Princeton's juniors (Caruso, Cook, Miller, Rayner, Weisz) have scored 491 of the team's 830 points, or 59.2 percent. Players who are able to return next year have scored 99.5 percent of the team's points (826 of 830).
• At 17.5 points per game, Henry Caruso is close to being on track to average the most points per game for any Tiger at season's end since Brian Taylor averaged 25.0 ppg in 1971-72. T.J. Bray averaged 18.0 ppg two seasons ago.
• Princeton has had seven double-doubles this season, including three in one game at Lipscomb, the first time that has happened in program history. Princeton's seven double-doubles this season, by four players (Caruso 3, Cook, Miller, Weisz 2) have already surpassed last year's five, which were all by Hans Brase. Princeton had seven double-doubles by four players in 2013-14 and 10 double-doubles by three players in 2010-11. Twenty-six double-doubles, by the 1964-65 and 1966-67 team, is the program record.
• Caruso's classmate, Pete Miller, has 65 rebounds through the first 10 games and is closing in on his total from last season, 74. Miller averaged 2.3 boards a game as a rookie and 2.4 as a sophomore but is averaging 5.9 this year.
• If the Tigers can sweep the trip, it'll put the Ivy at 5-0 against the MEAC this season. Penn beat Delaware State 60-54 on Nov. 17, Columbia beat Howard 72-59 on Dec. 28, the same day Brown beat Bethune-Cookman 81-73. Maryland-Eastern Shore will travel to Columbia on Jan. 6, the same day Howard will host Cornell, and Harvard will go to Howard on Jan. 16.

• Hampton and Norfolk State were picked to finish second and third in the MEAC's preseason poll of coaches and sports information directors, with North Carolina Central getting 14 1st-place votes on the way to 316 points, Hampton with nine first-place votes and 297 points, and Norfolk State third with 283 points.
• Norfolk State's Jeff Short was chosen as the MEAC's preseason Player of the Year, and Short and Hampton's Quinton Chievous were first-team preseason all-league picks. Hampton had Brian Darden on the second-team All-MEAC and Jarvon Pressley on the third team, and Norfolk State had D'Shon Taylor on the second team.
• Hampton made the NCAA Tournament last year by winning the MEAC Tournament title, and the Pirates went on to win an NCAA opening round game over Manhattan before falling to Kentucky. On the way to the MEAC Tournament title, Hampton, which was the sixth seed, beat second-seeded Norfolk State in the semis and then fifth-seeded Delaware State, which had knocked off top-seeded N.C. Central in the other semifinal, in the title game.
• Hampton's top NCAA statistical ranking entering Thursday's games was 68th in both offensive rebounds per game (13.0) and total rebounds per game (39.73). Brian Darden had the Pirates' top individual national ranking, standing 11th with a .914 free throw percentage. Norfolk State was in the top 10 percent of the country in three categories, including fourth in free throw percentage (.780), 18th in free throws mage (245) and 33rd in 3FG percentage (.392). The Spartans' top individual national ranking belonged to Jordan Butler, who was 21st in total blocks with 31.
• Eight Hampton players have started a game this season with only Reginald Johnson Jr. and Brian Darden starting all 11. Quinton Chievous has started all eight games in which he played and averages a double-double with 18.3 points and 10.6 boards a game. The Princeton contest will be Hampton's first game since the team wrapped the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic Dec. 23 with a win over Louisiana-Monroe.
• Nine Norfolk State players have started a game this season, and no Spartans have started all 14 games. Zaynah Robinson and Jordan Butler have started 13 of 14, and Jeff Short, who averages a team-best 17.0 points per game, has started 12 of 14.

| Mitch Henderson '98 is in his fifth season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 81-50. Under Henderson, Princeton is 46-11 at home, 37-19 in the Ivy League, and 23-5 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 65-17 when leading at the half under Henderson. Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first four campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Leuhring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04). Henderson is in seventh place on the Princeton all-time wins list. Bill Carmody, who was a Princeton assistant for Henderson's first two seasons and head coach for Henderson's last two, is in sixth place with 92 wins. Carmody hired Henderson as an assistant coach at Northwestern in 2000, where Henderson remained for 11 seasons until coming to Princeton. Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95. Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14. Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield). |
