Tigers Sweep Volleyball, Share First Place In Ivy League After 3-0 Start
October 01, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
All things considered, Devon Peterkin seemed to enjoy her first weekend of volleyball in Dillon Gym.
Peterkin, the younger sister of multi-time All-Ivy League rightside Kendall Peterkin '16, followed up her standout performance against Harvard Friday night by leading the Princeton women's volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-16, 25-19 victory over Dartmouth Saturday night in Princeton. Peterkin recorded a team-best 16 kills and 12 digs, and she added two blocks in the win, which keeps Princeton (9-3, 3-0 Ivy) tied with Columbia for the Ivy League lead.
Princeton, which won all six sets at home this weekend, also received strong performances from its senior co-captains. Reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Cara Mattaliano recorded 14 kills and 12 digs while hitting .464 for the match, while reigning Player of the Week Brittany Ptak added 12 kills and two blocks.
Mattaliano now has 943 kills in her career; she needs 57 to become the 13th player in Princeton history to go over the 1,000-kill mark.
Freshman Jessica Harris completed her strong weekend with 46 assists and 12 digs, while classmate Maggie O'Connell had nine kills and hit .562 in the three-set win. Junior Kelly Matthews led all players with 17 digs.
Princeton leaves the second weekend of the Ivy League season in a far different position as it did last season. In 2015, Princeton lost its first three matches before running off 10 of its final 11 to clinch a share of the Ivy title. The Tigers will try to move into first place by themselves next weekend in New York City, where they will take on Columbia at 7 pm on the Ivy League Digital Network.
