Volleyball Heads To New York City For First-Place Showdown With Columbia
October 06, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
One year ago, the Princeton women's volleyball team headed into the weekend just looking to right the ship. The Tigers had gotten off to an 0-3 start in Ivy play, and the thoughts of a championship season were replaced by hopes for a simple win.
As fate would have it, Princeton still managed both. The Tigers would win 10 of their next 11 to clinch a share of the program's 15th Ivy title. Still, it didn't seem like a recipe for success over the longterm, and head coach Sabrina King likes the adjustment her team made this season. This Princeton squad will head into the weekend with a 3-0 mark, and it will try to remain alone atop the Ivy standings Friday night when it takes on the league's other unbeaten, Columbia, in New York City.
You can watch both matches this weekend, including a Saturday showdown at Cornell, on the Ivy League Digital Network.
Alone At The Top
Princeton and Columbia both enter the weekend with 3-0 Ivy League records, and both completed home sweeps last weekend. Princeton defeated both reigning Ivy co-champion Harvard and Dartmouth by matching 3-0 scores, while Columbia pulled out a hard-fought 3-2 win over Yale and followed it with a 3-0 win over Brown. Columbia, which has won six straight matches entering the weekend, will have opened its Ivy season with five straight at home when the weekend ends.
Seventh Heaven
While Columbia is on a six-match win streak, Princeton enters the weekend on an Ivy-best seven-match win streak. Should the Tigers claim a win Friday night, their eight-match win streak would match the program's longest such streak since 2008. Should they win both matches this weekend, the nine-match win streak would be the longest since the 2007 Ivy championship team won 20 straight matches.
We're Honored
Princeton has won and Ivy-best four of the league's 10 individual honors handed out already this season. Freshman Devon Peterkin has won half of those honors, including the Rookie of the Week award she won last weekend after back-to-back double-doubles in the sweep of Harvard and Dartmouth. Peterkin also earned the honor after the opening weekend, when Princeton went 2-1 at the San Francisco Invitational. Senior middle Brittany Ptak, a two-time All-Ivy League honoree in her career, was named the Player of the Week after recording a career-high 21 kills at Penn, while Maggie O'Connell was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week after being named MVP of the Rutgers Tournament.
A Perfect 10
Princeton enters the weekend having won 10 straight Ivy League regular season matches, dating back to last season. After an 0-3 start in league play, the Tigers won 10 of their final 11 Ivy matches, including each of the last seven, to clinch a share of the Ivy title with Harvard.
High Efficiency
Princeton leads the Ivy League and ranks 23rd in the nation in attack percentage this season (.273), and the Tigers have three of the league's four most efficient hitters in O'Connell (.398), sophomore middle Nnenna Ibe (.380), and Ptak (.373). Princeton will try to defend the Ivy's most efficient hitter Friday night, as Columbia's Chichi Ikwuazom leads the Ivy League with a .400 percentage.
Welcome Matt
Senior Cara Mattaliano is the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, and she continues to be the Ivy League's most dangerous offensive option this season. She leads the league with 3.49 kills per set, and she ranks ninth in digs with 3.23 per set. She is 57 kills away from becoming the 13th player in program history to go over the 1,000-kill mark.
Scouting Columbia (8-5, 3-0 Ivy)
This is a far different team than Princeton saw during the first weekend of the season, when Columbia also competed in San Francisco and went 0-3 over the weekend. The Lions pulled off an incredible rally from 0-2 down against Cornell, and then held off a rally from 0-2 down by Yale — both matches were 3-2 wins for the Lions. Freshman Chichi Ikwuazom has been one of the early standouts in league play; she leads the Ivy League in both hitting percentage (.400) and blocks (1.35 per set).
Scouting Cornell (5-7, 0-3) Ivy)
The magic that Columbia has had this season has not been there for the Big Red, which isn't far away from a 2-1 Ivy mark. After letting a big lead slip away against Columbia, Cornell saw a 2-1 lead slip away in an eventual 15-13 fifth-set home loss to Brown. Sophomore Carla Sganderlla is a threat all over the court for the Big Red; she ranks fifth in the league in kills and first in service aces.
