No. 9 Princeton Looking To Continue Win Streak At Harvard
October 13, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – Following seven straight matches at DeNunzio, No. 9 Princeton will head on the road to take part in the Crimson Invitational, hosted by Harvard, on Saturday afternoon at Blodgett Pool.
The Tigers will battle the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) at 11 a.m. before a contest vs. the No. 13 Bucknell Bison. The matchup against NYAC will not count towards the Tigers' record, but will feature three alums, Drew Hoffenberg '15, Thomas Nelson '15 and Jamal Motlagh '06, playing for NYAC. Each game will be on the Ivy League Digital Network.
Bucknell and Princeton have squared off 59 times with head coach Luis Nicolao's squad winning 45 of the matchups. The Tigers are currently on a six-match winning streak vs. the Bison with Bucknell last winning in 2013. Princeton took down Bucknell, 9-7 and 11-7 last season.
The No. 9 team in the country has won three straight games and stands at 13-6 overall this year. Princeton is currently tied at the top of the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) with Brown, sporting a 4-1 record. Saint Francis-Brooklyn (3-2), Harvard (3-2), Iona (1-4) and MIT (0-5) round out the conference.
Most recently, the Tigers won vs. then No. 16 George Washington (15-8) and Navy (12-7) on Sunday. Sophomore Matt Payne scored five teams to pace the offense in the victory over George Washington while freshman Sean Duncan and sophomore Ryan Wilson provided hat tricks in the 12-7 decision over Navy. With his performance over the weekend, Duncan was named NWPC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season.
Payne surpassed his goal total from last year on Sunday and now leads the Tigers with 40 tallies along with a team-best 37 assists and 77 points. Five other players have recorded over 20 goals including Wilson, who have posted 20+ goals, assists, steals, and drawn ejections. Duncan paces the squad with 44 drawn ejections and has added 38 goals. Junior Vojislav Mitrovic has an 8-6 record along with a .590 save percentage and 190 saves in 14 games.
