Hazen '98 Named Arizona Diamondbacks General Manager
October 16, 2016 | Baseball
Princeton baseball alum Mike Hazen '98 will be moving from the American League East to the National League West.
Hazen, who spent the past 11 seasons with the Boston Red Sox and the 2015 campaign as the team's senior vice president and general manager, was announced Sunday as the new executive vice president and general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Prior to Boston, Hazen spent five seasons in the Cleveland Indians' front office.
At Princeton, Hazen was a two-time first-team All-Ivy League honoree and two-year team captain who had a career batting average of .333, twice earning the team's William J. Clarke Award as the team's most outstanding player. After Princeton, Hazen was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 1998 and spent two seasons playing in the team's organization. Hazen is the program's career stolen base leader (49), co-leader for stolen bases in a season (24), and still ranks in the program's top 10 in career games played (t-ninth, 159), career runs scored (sixth, 112), runs scored in a season (10th, 40, 1998), doubles in a game (t-first, three, April 18, 1998), career triples (t-fifth, nine), triples in a season (t-sixth, fifth, 1998), extra-base hits in a season (t-ninth, 22, 1998), slugging percentage in a season (third, .645, 1998) and career RBI (10th, 104). Hazen was the 2006 recipient of the team's Robert L. Clarke Award, which recognizes an alumnus for his post-Princeton contributions to baseball or his chosen career.
