Our first day is in the books! We landed in Amsterdam a little behind schedule but still with time to make it to the Anne Frank house. Driving through the city en route to the historic site, our team was mesmerized by scenes of Dutch canals beautifully draped in the city's fall foliage. After taking in the city sites, we pulled up to our main event in Amsterdam – Anne Frank's house. The house was both a living exhibit of how the Frank family lived during the Nazi invasion, as well as a museum that supplemented the visit with montages, interviews, and other videography. Walking from the bustling city street, up to the "annex" where the Franks lived in secret, was like being in a time warp. Each room had been carefully preserved with pictures from Anne's bedroom, black-out shades on the windows, and pictures of what the rooms would have looked like furnished. It was incredible. After we walked through the Anne Frank house, we boarded the bus to head to our game against the Dutch National Team in Zwolle.
Once we arrived in Zwolle, we met up with the Dutch national team for our pregame dinner. In the main facility of their sports complex we learned about each other's lives, both lacrosse and otherwise. Many of the girls had already graduated university and were in different stages of their lives, but we bonded over our love for the sport nonetheless. By the time we were warming up for the game, the sun had set, the stadium lights were on, and we were working out our plane-legs with the help of our trainer, Casey. It took us the beginning portion of the first half to gain our momentum and shake off the day of travel, but eventually we hit our stride. The offense focused on running some of their sets while the defense played variations of our sag defenses. With a group picture to close out the day, we boarded the bus ready for to get some rest for the exciting day to follow of site-seeing in Zwolle and a final game against the Dutch national team!
