November 19, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – In a back and forth battle that featured seven lead changes and six ties, the No. 11 Harvard Crimson escaped with a 14-13 victory over the No. 12 Princeton Tigers in the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Semifinal on Saturday afternoon at DeNunzio Pool.
Matched up at 13-all, Harvard's Joey Colton scored the game-winner with 54 seconds remaining to give the Crimson a chance to play for the Northeast Water Polo Conference title on Sunday vs. No. 10 Brown at 1 p.m.
Sophomore Matt Payne finished with six goals, giving him 63 on the season. He is one of only two players in program history to score over 60 goals and dish out more than 50 assists in one campaign. Freshman Sean Duncan and sophomore Ryan Wilson posted multi-goal outings while junior Vojislav Mitrovic had 14 saves in the loss.
After Harvard deposited the first two goals, Payne registered back-to-back tallies before Charlie Owens gave the Crimson a 3-2 advantage after the first eight minutes.
Much like the first quarter, Harvard raced out to a three-goal lead before Princeton ripped off three straight to tie the NWPC semifinal at 7-all with 28 seconds to go. Noah Harrison put the road team in front, 8-7, at the intermission. Each team scored three times in the third stanza setting the score at 11-10 Harvard heading into the fourth frame.
Goals from sophomore Michael Swart and Payne pushed Princeton ahead, 12-11 with 5:36 left on the clock. The Tigers' first lead of the game was short lived as Harvard knotted it up two minutes later. Less than a minute after the Crimson tied the score, Duncan threw one in the back of the net, giving Princeton a 13-12 advantage. Colton snagged consecutive goals for Harvard over the last 2:06 of game time to send Harvard to the NWPC Championship Game.
