Day 4 in the books, and it was just as memorable and unbelievable as the previous ones! Not to mention, it was the first day so far where our alarms weren't set for before 7am... so we woke up feeling extra rejuvenated and ready to take on the day ahead. Some of us started the day with a beach run - always doing the most to make our trainer Ang proud. Okay - the most important meal of the day, we chow down on the delicious breakfast buffet that awaits us every morning. As I sat back drinking my coffee, soaking in the incandescent views of the beach and Table Mountain, I felt the reoccurring sense of disbelief that I am actually here, in South Africa, experiencing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with my teammates. Feeling well-rested and satisfied, we boarded the bus full of anticipation and excitement for the activity scheduled for the day: a SAFARI!
After an easy 2 hour bus ride, we arrived at Aquila Game Reserve, a beautiful cabin resort surrounded by the seemingly never-ending layers of mountains draped across the skyline. We are immediately greeted with a complementary glass of sparkling grape juice - simply delicious. After another delectable meal (if it isn't obvious yet, the key to our hearts can be found through food), we hop on our safari trucks and begin our tour. After a team-wide dispute over which animals are actually part of the Big Five (the sophomores were right of course), we came to a consensus that it was the rhino, elephant, lion, water buffalo, and leopard and we were on a mission to find them all. Eyes-sharp and cameras ready we take off into the Reserve eager to spot the first animal. Riding along the bumpy terrain, we first spot hippos peaking out of the surface of the water. Eagerly awaiting another glimpse of the hippos emerging from the water, we are informed that hippos are known as ballerinas because they tip-toe around the water since they cannot actually swim. You learn something new everyday. Next, we saw herds of springbok and zebras, followed by sightings of rhinos, giraffes, water buffalo, and a wildabeast. We ventured into the lions den, coming face to face with seven different lions, each one as majestic as the last. Finally, we were blown away by the calming and commanding presence of two elephants crossing our path (they live to be 60-70 years old). Having checked the Big Five off our list and adding several more animals along the way, we headed back to the resort to board the bus and be on our way.
We finished our night with dinner at The African Cafe, where we ate a series of African dishes and engaged in their cultural dining rituals. After our meal we were blessed by an absolutely unbelievable performance of traditional African song and dance. Finishing the night with full bellies, painted faces, and gifts for our families and friends from the African Cafe, it's safe to say we were satisfied and grateful as we reflected on another day spent in Cape Town, South Africa.
I would be lion if I said Day 4 was anything less than incredible (get it?)
