Opportunity Knocks For Princeton vs. Top 5 Duo Of St. Lawrence, Rochester
December 01, 2016 | Men's Squash
Princeton men's squash coach Sean Wilkinson knows that he has the deepest Tiger squad in his four years as head coach, but he'll get a clearer picture of just how deep — and talented — his team is during its toughest road weekend of the season, an upcoming pair against No. 4 St. Lawrence and No. 3 Rochester.
Princeton will come into the weekend ranked 12th nationally, though there hasn't been a rankings update since the Tigers posted impressive home wins against both #13 Franklin & Marshall and #11 George Washington prior to Thanksgiving. Those matches included highly impressive showings at the top of the ladder; the freshman duo of Adhitya Raghavan (No. 1) and Gabriel Morgan (No. 2) were unbeaten at the top, while sophomores Clark Doyle and Cody Cortes followed them by winning 12 of 13 combined games to sweep at the No. 3 and 4 spots.
With youth powering the top, Wilkinson was able to see veterans like co-captains Ben Leizman and Abhimanyu Shah, as well as Komron Shayegan, post victories in the middle and bottom third of the lineup. Having that type of veteran presence located there in the lineup is an advantage that Wilkinson hasn't experienced at Princeton, and one that he is thrilled to have on this team.
Without question, this is a major step up in class against two teams that have both reached the CSA national team finals over recent years. It will also be the first road matches of the season for Princeton, who won't play again on the road until February. Both St. Lawrence and Rochester opened their seasons with wins, including a 9-0 victory for Rochester over No. 8 Dartmouth.
This will be the final weekend of competition for the Tigers, who will return to the court Monday, Jan. 9, for a noon showdown with Trinity.
