Fourth-Ranked St. Lawrence Fends Off Princeton Upset Bid; Tigers Eye No. 3 Rochester Sunday
December 03, 2016 | Men's Squash
The 12th-ranked Princeton men's squash team showed that it was ready to compete against a Top-5 program Saturday afternoon in St. Lawrence, but the Tigers didn't have the answers in some key late points and fell 8-1 at the fourth-ranked Saints.
The Tigers will take another shot at the national elite Sunday afternoon when they take on reigning CSA finalist Rochester, the third-ranked team in the country.
Junior Abhimanyu Shah picked up the Tigers' lone win; he rallied from an opening-game loss with wins of 11-6, 11-5, and 11-9 to grab an early victory in the team match. The Tigers nearly held a lead after the first shift, as freshman Shehab Thabet looked impressive in his collegiate debut. He took a pair of 12-10 wins in the first two games, but he fell in three close games — including 11-9 and 11-8 in the final two — to drop a 3-2 match.
Four of the remaining six matches would go four games, but St. Lawrence came up with wins in each, including a thriller at the top of the ladder. Tiger freshman Adhitya Raghavan scored an 11-6 win in his opener, but Ahmed Bayoumy scored wins of 13-11 and 15-13 to claim the victory.
