PRINCETON, N.J. (2/11/16) - The Princeton men's hockey teams makes a trip to Northern New York this weekend to face No. 20 Clarkson on Friday, Feb. 12 and St. Lawrence on Saturday, Feb. 13. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
The Tigers look to get back on track after dropping their last four games as they head to No. 20 Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Princeton is 5-16-2 overall and 3-11-2 in the ECAC to sit in 11th place in the standings. The team is coming off of one-goal losses to both Colgate by a score of 5-4 after holding a 3-1 lead and a 1-0 loss to No. 17 Cornell. Four underclassmen pace the offense led by freshman Ryan Kuffner's 15 points. He has a team-best 11 assists and four goals, while classmate Max Véronneau has scored a team-high eight goals and four assists for 12 points. Sophomore David Hallisey follows up with three goals and seven assists, while sophomore Eric Robinson has seven tallies and two assists. Junior Colton Phinney has started in every game and has a .925 save percentage and a 2.81 goals against average.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Clarkson has turned the tide on its season, going 8-2-1 since the Christmas break after a 7-8-2 start. The Golden Knights are back in the national rankings and are No. 20 as they were back on Nov. 21 when Princeton played them the first time. The Green & Gold are unbeaten in their last six games, having not lost since a 5-2 game at Dartmouth on Jan. 15. Leading the offense is sophomore Sam Vigneault's 22 points on 10 goals and 12 assists. Junior A.J. Fossen has 18 points on eight goals and 10 helpers. Both senior Christian Powers and junior Jordan Boucher have 14 points, while seven others have 10 or more points. Clarkson has utilized both senior Greg Lewis and junior Steve Perry in goal. Lewis is 9-4-2 with a 1.84 GAA and a .928 save percentage, while Perry is 6-6-1 with a 2.87 GAA and an .885 save percentage. However it has been Lewis is net during the last eight-game run.
THE PRINCETON/CLARKSON SERIES
The Tigers have won the last two meetings with the Golden Knights including a 3-0 shutout of Clarkson in November when the Knights were ranked No. 20. Eric Robinson, Kyle Rankin and Max Véronneau each scored while Colton Phinney made 31 saves. Steve Perry stopped 21 on the other end. Clarkson holds a 79-31-5 edge in the all-time series, which began in 1927-28.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
St. Lawrence enters the weekend 14-11-3 overall and 8-6-2 in the ECAC to sit in a three-way tie for fourth place in the standings. The Saints are unbeaten in their last two weekends, sweeping Colgate and Cornell, followed by a shutout of RPI and a tie with Union. Twelve players are in double digits in points led by junior defender Gavin Bayreuther. Bayreuther has a team-high 13 assists and adds seven goals. Sophomore Joe Sullivan has a team-high nine goals and chips in eight assists for 17 points, the same number senior Brian Ward has to his credit. Senior Tommy Thompson and junior Drew Smolcynski add in 16 points apiece. Sophomore Kyle Hayton has started in 25 of 28 games in goal. He has a .938 save percentage and a 1.95 GAA.
THE PRINCETON/ST. LAWRENCE SERIES
St. Lawrence has a 68-21-11 advantage in the series since it began in 1947-48. Princeton is looking for its first win in the series since March 4, 2011, as the Saints have gone 9-0-2 since. It was the last time Princeton hosted a first-round series, and fell 2-1 to St. Lawrence after taking a 4-1 Game 1, losing 3-2 and 2-1 in the next two. Earlier this season, the Saints won a 5-1 game at Hobey Baker Rink.
