The challenge is a daunting one for the Princeton women's swimming and diving team, but head coach Susan Teeter has been around her team enough to know that it will come out and battle all the way Saturday.
That is the culture of this program, and the tradition that it has built.
Princeton moved up one place in the team standings during the second day of the 2016 Ivy League Championships, which are being held at DeNunzio Pool. Harvard holds the lead with 956.5 points, while Princeton moved into second with 944.5 points. Yale is third with 928, while no other team has more than 700.
While the current deficit is a small one for the Tigers — they cut more than 30 points off their Thursday deficit — Princeton knows that Harvard qualified six finalists for the 3-meter diving competition Saturday night, a total that actually gives the Crimson a significant edge heading into the final day.
Not that it will affect the way the Tigers compete over those final hours of their Ivy League season. That simply isn't the program that Princeton has developed over decades of excellence in the Ivy League.
There were plenty of positives Friday, including a second-place finish for senior Sada Stewart in the 400 IM. She took second in 4:13.36, while classmate Beverly Nguyen took third in 4:15. 27.
One event later, Princeton freshman Isabel Reis took second in the 100 fly in 53.25. The Tigers had three finalists in the event, as both Morgan Karetnick (6th, 54.01) and Nikki Larson (7th, 54.02) were strong finishers for the Tigers.
Senior Elizabeth McDonald took fourth in the 200 free in 1:47.83, while Alisabeth Marsteller (6th, 1:48.63), Claire McIlmail (7th, 1:49.33) and Linday Temple (8th, 1:51.64) were also A finalists.
Junior Olivia Chan took third in the 100 breast (1:01.94), while Temple took third in the 100 back (53.82). Freshman Joanna Curry added a seventh-place finish in the back in 55.86.
Princeton took fourth in both the 200 medley relay (1:40.88) and the 800 free relay (7:15.45).
Saturday's preliminary session, which will include the 200 back, the 100 free, the 200 breast and the 200 fly, will begin at 11 am. Finals will start at 6 pm, and both sessions will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
